Henrique Retention Strategy

Created by: jnowariak
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2021
Published: Feb. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The idea is Rask for Henrique 1 for 1, as all good hockey trades are, but the retention strategy is palatable in the long term. 3 years at 3 mil is essentially the Eric Staal contract and, while Henrique is not Staal, it could be enough to make Henrique a viable option for Seattle. On the Ducks side, they stay cap neutral for this year and next but essentially buy out the last 2 years of the Henrique deal for nothing.

As far as it goes, Henrique would be a good fit at the price here. Even at term IMO.

Why do the Wild want Henrique for the next 3 years? He isn't good.

If Henrique became a $3m x 3.5 contract ANA would get a better offer than Rask $3m x 1.5.

Fair point, I was thinking from a term perspective. It keeps them from paying after the original term. Which isn’t as important as the actual dollars but it’s gonna matter when their young guys need new deals.

Yeah, Ducks are going to retain 3M for 4 years while taking 2 years 3M Rask. Lol...

Henrique is still good and you know it or else you wouldn't be trading for him.

Probably true, I’d throw in a later pick but even then they’ll need to take salary back from any team that took him. More or less trying to think of acceptable ways for it to work rather than what will/will not happen.

That's just the thing. He's not still good, and they don't know it. They want him because Minnesota is desperate for top 6 centers, and they only know he used to be a second line center. It's entirely based on reputation.

Just send them MarJo and Bjugstad (both would clear waivers just like Henrique did). Call it even and be done with it.

Problem is, Ducks would need to retain the later years of the contract to make it worthwhile even if the cap math would work this year. I would be hesitant to take on his contract if it were 3.5 or more, he’ll be effective for us this year in a top 6 role but after he should be considered a bottom 6 guy and that needs to be reflected in the cap hit.

I'm content to trade those two for 6th and 7th rounders at this point which if you consider the cap space for the summer it probably a better return then Henrique. Look at the guys the ducks didn't waive that should say enough about Henrique.

I think at the right price he makes sense. He’d be the 2C this year and after would be demoted to bottom 6 duty. One thing in the back of my mind is if he produces with KK and Zucc, is he a reasonable pick for Seattle at the right cap hit? He’s better than Rask but his contract is a bear, if you can modify that then the conversation changes.

There is no right price. Not having his contract when we have to give Fiala, Kaprizov, Eriksson Ek and Greenway extensions is far more valuable than anything he'll provide on the ice. Especially given we're already paying Parise 7.5M a year to be an AHL level forward. He is not going to be enticing for Seattle, they might get to pick one of Greenway or Dumba. And if they don't he's still not enticing with that contract.

That’s reasonable, but I do think Henrique is getting snake bit this year and is a real option. It’s also not going to break my heart if he stays out of MIN.

I would say that’s a bit hyperbolic. We are going to pay a guy like Danault 5-6 mil next year with term. I agree that the cap space is important but compared to the next best option it’s not a no brainer.

We're not signing Danault for 5-6 either.

Compared to trading for Henrique, not trading for Henrique IS a no brainer.

Out of curiosity, who are the top 6 centers in MIN next year? That will give me a better idea of where your head is at.

Rossi and Eriksson Ek. The wild card is if Dumba is traded for a center.

Cool, that explains why we disagree. I’d love it if that were the case but I’m not sold on that. Time will tell and you very well may be right.

What part aren't you sold on? I'm not saying it's going to be a good team, but it's better than handing out lots of money or term for a middle 6 center like Danault, or trading for a bottom 6 center with a bad contract like Henrique.

I think Guerin may try to scrape the bottom of the barrel for more Bonino, Johansson, Bjugstad type free agents/expiring contracts. Top of mind include guys like Bozak, Stepan, Stastny for FA's, or Strome, Carter, Turris for expiring guys, and I think they'll promptly find that, like the few we have now, they're not viable top 6 centers, and Rossi will take the spot.

But regardless, this team is not going to get better by employing any of these players, so why would we want to give them term?

Maybe just remove the retention. Henrique's that much better player than Rask, despite getting waived. Ducks knew that pretty much no one could take that contract in.

Also, one thing to consider is that if he can find his game once again, his value gets a tad higher than before since I think he's waiver exempt now, now that he has gone through it. It makes playing with cap tad more easier.

Oh, and also for what it's worth...

Quoting: OP
it could be enough to make Henrique a viable option for Seattle.

Nope. SEA is still taking Greenway over $3M of Henrique 100 out of 100 times.

I think Anaheim retains 100% of Henrique for the remainder of his contract. Lol not really a contract other teams are going to want, just fans looking for a band aid
