Description
An idea of what the Devils roster could look like next year (not including any potential acquisitions from outside the organization).

Assuming current prospects can live up to their potential, the forward group looks solid. The defense could still use one or two more established players to improve it. The players listed as scratches/taxi squad are players who have played so far this season and have looked decent, and I would consider using them as trade bait to try and bring in a decent younger defender, as there may not be room for them in our lineup.

Looks pretty good. I would probably trade Butcher and replace him with Walsh. Not sure if Mercer is NHL Ready so I would replace him with Yegor.

If those young players continue to improve then they could be a surprise playoff team. In a perfect world, they'd use that cap space to get a big time RHD, through FA or trade.

I agree 100%. Legit top pair RHD would be huge for this team. Any ideas?

Overpay for Hamilton but I doubt it. If we get a top 10 pick, we could get Hughes, Power, Edvinsson, Clarke, Lambos, or Chakya however Clarke is the only one that is righty. Maybe we could wait for Walsh to develop because he's looked good so far in Binghamton

The only guy I can think of is Dougie Hamilton, other than that maybe hope that Seth Jones becomes a free agent.

For me he's too old, has too much term and makes too much money. He's still good but I'd worry he'll turn into another Subban by next year.

Devils really don't need to spend 8,9,10 mil+ on a dman... severson can and should play top pair. They just need to find good value 2nd/3rd pair guys

Ellis is interesting. I think Nashville said he isn't on the block but yeah like you said things can change. He's definitely a top pair D just not sure if he's the kind of guy the Devils need. Devils D is pretty undersized already and Ellis is only 5'10. Not a dealbreaker but I worry about how that impacts his game as he gets older. Also his contract way too long (6 years left after this) with a high AAV. Devils probably aren't really competing for another couple of years at which point Ellis might be on the decline. I think for it to happen Nashville would have to accept a lowball offer from NJ which quite frankly I don't think they're willing to do. Interesting idea though and I love watching him play.

I assumed he'd either be traded or he'd walk at the end of the year. What we could get for him probably depends a lot on how he plays going forward, so I'm not gonna try and guess one way or the other. Probably just a few picks and prospects.

In terms of Seattle, if we go with the 7-3-1 protection scheme, we could protect:

Johnsson, Bratt, Nico, Palmieri, Zacha, Wood, McLeod (Hughes, Holtz, Foote, and Mercer are exempt)
Severson, Murray, Butcher (Smith and Bahl are exempt)
Blackwood

So of people I have listed on the active roster, Bastian and Subban would be the only ones exposed. Personally I could see them taking a Boqvist or a Kuokkanen over Bastian, so idk if it would affect things too much. In an ideal world they could take Subban as a "face of the franchise" type thing, but the cap hit might be prohibitive. Even if they don't though, he's looked ok this year and it wouldn't be the end of the world if he finishes his contract here.
