2020-21 Leave Tavares unprotected

Description
Looking at that Nashville trade idea posted on MapleLeafHotStove - https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2021/02/21/exploring-the-prospects-of-a-filip-forsberg-trade-to-toronto/

That assets in the trade can be adjusted. The value isn't the point, the Seattle Ex Draft is the point.

I wouldn't want to lose one of Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin or Holl so that would leave only 4 spots for forwards. Forsberg would want to be protected and I would expect the 3 young forwards leaving Tavares as the odd man out BUT he has a NMC that would have to be waived.

So it would be very un-Dubas-like to be picking up any players with term this year including Forsberg. What do you think?

Or would Dubas approach the Captain, Tavares, and ask him to waive his NMC to allow the Leafs to protect another player brought in to help win the Cup?

Well, I think it depends on who the forward is. Let's just say it's Forsberg for a moment; that's a guy you're willing to pay a bit extra to keep around. If you get Forsberg, you go 7-3-1 and pay what it takes to get Seattle to take Dermott over Holl if that's your preference. And really would it take that much to convince the brand new franchise starting from nothing to take the 24 year old Dman, rather than the 29 year old? I don't think so.

I read, directly from the description:

"The assets in the trade can be adjusted. The value isn't the point, the Seattle Ex Draft is the point."

He also mentions that Tavares would have to waive his NMC

Nope. I wouldn't expect him too, nor do I think the OP would. I think the overarching point of this is that acquiring a forward with term may not be the best option for Dubas this year, but rather the rental route.

    Team Explanation
****Looking at that Nashville trade idea posted on MapleLeafHotStove - https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2021/02/21/exploring-the-prospects-of-a-filip-forsberg-trade-to-toronto/

That assets in the trade can be adjusted. The value isn't the point, the Seattle Ex Draft is the point.****

Not only is the VALUE not the point but even the player. People in the media are stirring up this possible trade for a Top 6 forward. I am wondering with the Seattle Expansion Draft coming this summer is this really the time to pick up a player that the Leafs couldn't protect if the Top 4 dmen were protected.

As @LeafsFanForSomeReason suggested, Dubas could protect the top 3 dmen and make a deal with Seattle to select Dermott allowing 7 forwards to be protected.

That just adds more cost to picking up a Top 6 forward with retention so I am still not sure if it is worth it.

In the Seattle Expansion Draft protection? Only Nylander and Matthews need to be protected. Amirov is exempt.

Probably better off directly working a trade out with Seattle so they don't take someone you want to keep. For example, Seattle would agree to select someone like Engvall and in return, they get perhaps a pick, prospect, a young player or some combination of the three. Considering in this scenario, they'd be leaving John freaking Tavares on the table, the price would probably be steep.

Or, go 7-3-1 and take your chances with Seattle taking Holl or Dermott. Would you rather lose one of them or a prospect like Abruzzese, Amirov or Sandin?
