My understanding is that it had to happen because like Adam Fox, John Marino wasn't going to sign with the team that drafted him.

If this trade never happens, we never trade Calen Addison. GMJR said that he was comfortable with moving Addison because of how good Marino was. Either we give up a different prospect in the Zucker deal or that deal never goes through.

Likely causes a domino effect, pit would still have their 1st in a year like this where they are struggling and could look to retool without having to worry about their 1st being a high pick

Oilers didn't have much of a choice, he wasn't going to sign with us, and his value wasn't very high at the time

Yep this was the reason. Marino had Lagesson, Jones and Bear (on top of Nurse, Klefbom, Larsson) ahead of him in the Oilers eyes at the time. He had a better opportunity of making a team going elsewhere. I think it was kind of mutual parting ways, where as the Fox deal was strictly him not wanting to sign with the team he was on.

Marino would probably have been traded to Boston or to a team near there if he didn’t go Pittsburgh. He wasn’t going to sign in Edmonton so there had to be a trade.
