Fixing the Sharks is more simple than people realize

Created by: yikes
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2021
Published: Feb. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don’t take the title too seriously but I think it’s pretty simple being able to fix this team, going to follow that now.

Move 1 big contract, trade one of 3 (Meier, Hertl, Labanc)
Use a roster of youth mixed with current players to put together a rebuilding roster developing the youth but not being overwhelmed. Draft high again in 2022.

With the cap space available the sharks could also take on dead weight for 2021-2022 to gain more assets. And scratch Vlasic for the love of god as early as possible. Run the 7 D listed and forward group can go 11F guys if needed after Marleau retires or whatever happens.

1.

Players gone at TDL for scraps or leaving in UFA
    2.
    SJS
Either stays for 1-3 year contract or traded for a 3rd or maybe somehow a 2nd (lol that’s a dream)
      3.
      SJS
One of the following will be traded or 2/3:

Hertl : 2nd most value or could get big overpay
Meier : most value unless Hertl gets a big buyer
Labanc : could get a decent return or for a upgraded piece
        ANA
          Trade Targets for most value

          SJS
          1. Alnefelt, Hugo [Reserve List]

          3. Johnson, Tyler
          4. Raddysh, Taylor
          5. 2021 1st round pick (TBL)
          6. 2022 3rd round pick (TBL)
          Additional Details:
Raddysh & Hugo for taking on Johnson + Retention
          Barre-Boulet + a First for Hertl
          TBL
          1. Hertl, Tomas ($2,000,000 retained)
          5.
          SJS
            Seattle
            ANA
            1. Burns, Brent
            2. Donato, Ryan
            3. Gambrell, Dylan
            Additional Details:
With Burns current play he could not be exposed. If we enter a rebuild it essential to move him plus others.

With his current play he could be exposed for no cost but I’ll throw incentives here just cause it’s not gonna effect the plan going forward too much.

Even with a bare bones set of moves and room for plenty of other moves the teams future is already brighter and the youth movement is much more promising. Even with the Hertl TBL trade looking slightly rough for the Sharks.

Yeah, but it’s better than making a giant trade. As adding so many assets in one trade makes it unappealing for tampa so I kinda just tossed whatever together. Could see them adding more but that also than adds to making it more unlikely. I had two firsts involved with the current template and it looked a little shocking for Tampa. Either way the idea is good enough there I think to atleast. Other choices are COL, MIN, maybe Boston.

Knyzhov is a shocking development that no one saw coming.

He’s constantly doing the right things, simple and smart. He’s got some surprising speed and he’s not afraid of going into any area (corner, bloody fight last night although he lost lol) and that’s including offensive areas where he’s not an offensive threat in the sense that he’s not Makar; yet if he sees the open chances he’ll try to make the play.

I think with his IQ and work ethic he is preparing to be a top4D or a confident 2nd pair guy kinda like ekholm (fringe top pair but every team would want him).

He isn’t amazing but he isn’t bad or average. And he’s always trying. You can see he’s a guy who has potential to grow so much more but where he is starting as a base is so solid. He’ll either be a safe bottom 4 or a very strong 2nd pair guy. I have him on my second pair and believe with the right partner he’ll own it long term. He could become a great two way but his defence is solid, if his offence grows he’ll become a threat going forward.

His 5v5 DEF stats are crazy good for a rookie who’s taking a large workload on a bad team

You think he’ll crack the NHL team next year?

Confidently. He’s not on the roster cause we’re lacking. He’s earn his spot.

To be honest i like this set up. Only thing is i would keep Hertl and try and move Meier and Labanc.
In my view, he is by far the best player out of these three. Meier and Labanc are just not good. Of course not as easy getting good return for them but i dont see them on a contending teams top 6 group and Sharks want to compete soon but dont see it with them in the top 6.

I always viewed Labanc as a middle 6 guy but surprised you don’t think Meier is top 6. How come?

Meier age and potential would fetch equal to or more then Hertl and Hertl I think deserves a chance to move on. Labanc and Meier are both younger and can find their games. Meier still has good value but Labancs contract is his issue. Find their games and utilize them as opposed to selling low (unless we can find the right trades for them).

Just my personal opinion and not based on facts at all smile Not a huge fan of him and have the feeling he needs really good players around him to be able to score. He is not a player that makes the others around him good... And those are the kind of players i think is needed.

Karlsson immovable just due to his contract/ nmc - even if he was playing amazing I doubt many teams are biting on 11.

Same thing as sharks fans trying to move Vlasic, but worse cause Vlasic sucks. Vlasic is a expensive pylon whereas Karlsson is expensive and just inconsistent. Both immovable for different reasons other than expensive. We don’t even have to mention the NMC for Vlasic cause I think it’s a pipe dream moving him.

Vlasic, Jones, Karlsson, Kane are going to be sharks long term.

Meier and Labanc are movable but only for a good return. Meier has more value.

Hertl is our best trade assets along with Donato and Kane and Couture but the last 2 are unlikely to move.

Burns’ play has been stellar and makes his sale to Seattle more likely/ easy (but that could make management also want to keep him) which is a bad decision if they do decide to keep him.

Both are bad decisions. Waiting until 2024 or 25 when Vlasic buyout is actually useful - Jones can be done when necessary.

Say he waived. What else would Sharks expect in a Karlsson deal for say...

                1. Karlsson at 100% (no retention)
                2. Karlsson at 75% (Sharks retain $2.875 million x 6 years, new team pays $8.625 million x 6 years)
                3. Karlsson at 50% (Sharks and new team split $5.75 million x 6 years)

Karlsson, really depends on his play/ the team inquiring. He wouldn’t get his return of what was paid for on acquiring him.

I don’t really know his price/ value it comes down to it.

I mean his contract tanks his value to the point where I doubt we’d even see a return of significance. Maybe a first for Karlsson at full value at most? With retention nothing more than a first and a prospect at most? I doubt any team is willing to move a first for Karlsson due to the fact that A) if you are acquiring Karlsson it only makes sense to be a contender who wants a puck moving QB D man (unless your team is on the come up but at that point that means you obviously have some young guys who are gonna need to be paid). But that instantly gets cancelled out because 0% of contenders can fit 11mil. So then you have to retain money. But even then I doubt a contender is willing to pay a first for Karlsson when they could acquire a rental for cheaper or a longer term player who can be cheaper. Karlsson at 5.7 is obviously a fantastic price so that would get teams bidding but I don’t see more than a good prospect and a first and maybe a player coming back for like a 2nd/ 3rd pair guy?? Is that likely, I doubt it to see that return. If a team offered a first and a prospect I’d take it (not because I dislike Karlsson but rebuilding makes utilizing him impossible so why not get whatever I could get).

50% retention would be the only way we’d realistically ever see a return which would fetch an actual “profit” but it’s chances are slim. At 100% there is no return unless we’re lucky.

At 50%, I think a few teams with cap space, most with competitive window approaching, could be interested.

For NJ Devils, I was thinking it could be an option since Subban is moving out after next season, and even though Severson is playing great (especially with Smith) he is not truly a #1 guy. Also, our RHD depth behind Severson is Subban (gone after next season), Tenneyson, Carrick, Vatanen (all gone after this season) and the best prospect RHD's are Reilly Walsh and Case McCarthy. Both will be NHL players, but not top pairing guys.

So, was thinking Karlsson with the retention to Devils for Subban with retention to Skarks (or third team), plus another short-term cap move to Devils, and other players, prospects to Sharks. Or could do after 2021-22 season and just leave Subban out of it.

I’ve seen subban to the sharks and would be fine with it.

I’d say subban =/= Karlsson but Karlsson contract is scarier

                Subban 9mil -> SJS
A first (protected) (depends on EK retention)
                Prospect (depends on EK retention)

                Karlsson -> NJD

If the devils wanted to pay cheaper they just take Karlsson full on for Subban full on and then I’d assume it would be cheaper with Karlsson being better the Devils would still pay imo.

Idk the exacts but I don’t think a third team would need to be involved (especially if we moved out other players + Karlsson)

Exactly what I was thinking. Subban gets a lot of hate, he is not a Norris caliber d-man anymore, but he not a zero either. He is an overpaid middle-pair guy, who when he shows up, can play. But not as good as Karlsson.

                Subban (at 50%)
Conditional pick based on Karlsson GP
                Pick
                Defensive prospect

                Karlsson (50%)
Sorenson (makes up the $ difference between Subban/Karlsson) or similar short-term dump

Honestly I’m thinking Meier is the one to go at this rate if I’m perfectly honest. Maybe it’s just my bias for Hertl, but I’d rather see Labanc or Meier get yeeted than Hertl. Just think having the center depth is a better plan if we can’t commit to a total tank. Plus Timo and Labanc have been underperforming imo.

Power is not NHL ready, and he's the third defenseman in the draft, he is aggravating to watch defensively at Michigan. I'm not sure Tampa would make that trade, and it would require NTCs to agree. Also not sure Seattle would take that payment. Burns is so talented offensively but I mean legit he handed the Wild that first goal, and his contract is so rough.
