Give us PK for EK, no retention. Due to that, you don't need to give any prospects. However, I'm curious what you feel would be good to come with EK to NJ to help even it out. I don't think the Sharks will part with a 1st for the next two years, but perhaps a roster player? Labanc maybe? Interested on your thoughts.

If I'm being honest, I don't see the Sharks trading EK. They gave up a lot to get him and I still think they want to see a full season from him.

Never would accept from SJ, especially given the increasing change that Karlsson could end up spending a long period of time on LTIR with the rate of injuries he is sustaining.

Agree, but I wonder what that number would be though. $4 million? $5 million (x 6 years really).

So what then? They wait it out? Best case scenario is the NHL and NHLPA agree on one limited compliance buy-out....which I am guessing they would use on Vlassic.

I have no idea...this is what I am exploring this. I cannot imagine any team taking Karlsson without at least $3 million retained and some heavy conditions on games played. Say if NJD gave up Subban, Walsh, 2021 2nd pick and got Karlsson at around $7-7.5 million x 6 years and he plays 70 games in 3 of first 4 years, I think they would be happy adding another unprotected 1st rounder. But the deal goes bust for them if he plays only half the time.

I get that, but glass half empty, half full. If Sharks are rebuilding, they'll want to move the salary, which is nearly impossible in this day.

This possibility lowers the cost for NJD, lowers the return for San Jose though.

Where is the equilibrium? What number leaves little enough on San Jose's books to move him....and little enough on NJD's (or other teams) books to take him?

Sharks won't retain that much for that long. I don't think anyone would.

If SJ retains, that's guaranteed cap hit through the rest of his contract. Karlsson will probably spend half of the rest of his career (if not most) on LTIR. Not worth trading him unless someone wants him for free.

That is kind of the point. Few would want him at $11.5 million. You'd be getting picks/prospects for the retention....its a question of more futures for more retention.

In other words, if other teams are starting at "1"...and sharks are starting at "10"...where would they meet in middle

5.75M is max retained, yet SJ only gets a single alright prospect, that isn't "Lots of picks/prospects." SJ would be much safer with keeping Karlsson.

Walsh + two conditional picks based on playing time (as high as two unprotected 1st round picks...as low as two nuttin' picks)...sorry should have been more clear.

EK65 is broken, has been since the big trade and I don't foresee him coming back to his elite level. PK isn't his elite level either but he is the better choice here.
