Additional Details:
This trade was reportedly going to happen at the 2016 NHL draft. However, there were many reasons it didn’t.
1) The trade wasn’t truly finalized. Apparently, Marc Bergevin wanted another asset for the former top-tier NHL defenseman. With hindsight, I would’ve just took the pick or just took Draisaitl and ran. However, nobody knew Draisaitl’s upside back then, as his value back then was probably similar to that of a Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Reading the post from Elliot Friedman from way back, I saw the package asked back then was Draisaitl, the 4th pick, one of Nurse/Klefbom, and another asset. However, for the sake of the trade above, I say that Bergevin buckles under the pressure of taking the deal and takes it without another asset (which is still an unreal steal)
2) The BIGGEST reason this trade didn’t go through was who Montreal would’ve picked with that 4th pick. And, no, it wasn’t going to be Jesse Puljujärvi. If Dubois fell to #4, the trade was likely happening. So, since this is a hypothetical post, let’s just say that Dubois was not the pick from Columbus at 3, and they took Puljujärvi.
