Time to move some core

Created by: crankshaft

Description
Load up on prospects, begin the rebuild officially. Buyout Karlsson who only seems to make the team worse and no one will take that contract. Demote Jones to AHL. None of this will happen, I am well aware.

Hertl would be a great fit on the Leafs, I loath to trade Amirov so early but I'd do it to get Hertl

1. go look at the buyout calculator for Erik Karlsson and tell me if you think that's a good idea, considering that his cap hit for both the 22/23 season and the 26/27 season is $11,361,111 - which would put this team as you've structured it well over the cap for the 22/23 season. like it or not, we're stuck with him for most likely the duration of his contract because of that lemon of a season at the very end of it. (and may I just say that that one single year on his contract is why i want GM Doug Wilson fired with great prejudice.)

2. so we're starting a rebuild and trading away two solid players - but we retain five million in salary (ha!) and only get back one pick and a handful of -- well, i don't want to call Domi trash, but he sure hasn't done ****e in Columbus, and I'd like to see what your reasoning on those prospects are. I don't know much about the leafs system, but i am NOT sold on Marchenko.

As a Leafs fan I think I’d prefer Meier but Hertl is great too. I’d probably do this.

That return for Hertl is a bit weak. Probably a better fit for Meier out there as well. I guess I'm not in board with your rebuild plan. The Sharks are in position for a very epic bottom out. So of course you move guys with any value but Karlsson and Vlasic will sit and rot on this team. As often as Karlsson is hurt I don't see him lasting the entire deal so he will finish on the LTIR. Vlasic if you sit him enough may just opt to retire early. Jones helps you bottom out for premium talent. If Burns continues to play well another 3 years I think Sharks could move him for assets at the trade deadline. I think it's a 5 year rebuild job minimum though.

Trust me, Hertl holds way more value. Leader, scorer, PKer, PP, 200 ft game...Timo is a scoring power forward with some grit especially in the playoffs.

Trying to be realistic and also keeping in mind Timo's stats this season. Timo has always picked it up in the 2nd half but right now he is not impressing anyone.

I was surprised Amirov wasn't a top 10 pick in last years draft...he is really, really good with a super high ceiling. Topi had an outstanding world junior and I was already high on him before that, he won defenseman of the tournament in a tourney that also featured Drysdale, Sanderson and so many other blue chippers. In most of my Mocks last year I had Amirov going in the top 10 and Topi going to us. Kirill is so, so skilled and has the potential to really shine in the NHL when he does come over.

Timo is surrounded by a bad team at the moment. If I couldn't get more for him I would hold him until he rebounds.

Agreed but he hasn't helped himself at all the last 1.5 seasons. I would personally ship Meier out before Hertl

Logan is surrounded by that same team yet has still managed 10 goals and 18 points in 19 games. Timo has TWO goals and eight points mostly playing top PP time and top six minutes.

for sure, it's going to be a five year or more rebuild, but we do have a fair amount of talent in the 18 to 23 age range right now (albeit not top tier talent for the most part) and as long as their development is handled with care i could see one or two high draft picks making a world of difference for the Sharks.

Totally agree, the thing that could mess that up is goaltending unless Sharks land Wallstedt.

Which, as much as I would love to have Power or L. Hughes, is exactly why I'm hoping we draft him.
