One Way to Change Things Up

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2021
Published: Feb. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Krueger won't play Jeff Skinner, and we hear nothing from Ryan Johansen. Maybe this will give both players new life. Skinner revives his career getting first-line minutes with Matt Duchene, whose attitude improves dramatically now that he doesn't have the worst contract on the team. Johansen gets to funnel pucks to one of the great goal-scorers in the League instead of the two stiffs he's centering now.

Not entirely serious. Nobody's traded John Gibson for a bag of peanuts and a beer today, so I don't have much to do.

Seeing as the first round pick is going to be top five most likely, there is no way in hell the Sabres give it up. Flipping second round picks might make more sense because the Sabres will likely be drafting higher. Otherwise this isn’t a terrible idea, the Sabres have a little more depth at LW than at center, and it gives us a chance to move Staal later on and not need to acquire another center. Of course if they do not retain Taylor Hall they’ll need another LW next year.

In the back of my mind was the idea that the pick would be #6 or worse. (It would have to be top-5-protected if this whole scheme was serious.) Detroit and Ottawa already look like they have the first two slots sewn up and my once-mighty Ducks are taking on water like the Titanic. The Rangers look lost and the Canucks are a surprise. Neither Nashville nor New Jersey look too healthy, either. Then there might be the usual undeserving lottery winners.

Nashville is only 2 spots ahead of Buffalo in points%. Moving up two spots in the 2nd round isn’t worth taking on a worse contract.

Giving up a top 10 pick isn’t worth the better bad contract even without retention on Skinner.

Consider also that Seattle is being handed a high pick as well. Still the Sabres would have to be a near playoff team to be willing to give up a 1st rounder. Not happening.

I don't know about this trade. Skinner has been so awful but that Sabres pick could be a dandy. I still feel like more needs to go to Predators to make them consider it.

After this year, Skinner is owed $52 million and Johansen is owed $32 million. So Buffalo saves $20 million plus two years of a $9 million cap hit. For a team in Buffalo's economic position (i.e., penurious owners), I think that's worth the difference between a first-rounder and a second-rounder, and I'll bet that the Pegulas think so, too.

Not a top 10 first rounder, those players are ready to contribute very quickly.
