Not sure this team can win - time to blow it up maybe

Created by: HabsFan33
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2021
Published: Feb. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Although the Leafs and Sens have not won anything either, the difference they have is that they struggle for a few years or so, got lucky in the lottery and drafted high in the first round. In the case of Ottawa, they sent their best assets at the time to get more picks and prospects. Montreal has only had three picks inside the top 10 since 2012, and two of those guys are gone! Maybe it's time for Habs to struggle a few years in order to better position ourselves for when guys like KK, Suzuki, Romanov and Primeau reach their prime.

Just tired of the same thing every season, great start then stumble followed by a small peak then plateau for the rest of the year. Maybe my view will change in three weeks, lol!!!!

Is it Lundkvist being included that's a problem? Or not wanting Danault? Just curious tbh.

We seem to do this every year! We start like gangbusters then flutter for awhile before finding our sweet spot as a middle tier team. I love the acquisitions of Anderson and Toffoli but we have always lack high end skill. Just think it's time that we struggle for a few years to get some good lottery picks. Not sure tbh anymore.

It was time to do this 3-4 years ago when our "assets" were still in their primes (ie: Price/Weber/Galchenyuk/Gallagher)

It's too late now to blow it up because nobody will give us anything of real value for these deteriorating players

I’ve been saying this as long as I’ve followed hockey about MTL. (Or just most teams in general). The most conventional way of becoming a Cup champ/ cup contender in the salary cap era is through being absolutely awful for a few seasons stockpiling top picks / prospects. Habs just got unlikely that in 2012 and 2018 when they drafted 3rd overall, they didn’t get an elite player. Imagine a 2014 Drai, 2017 Heiskanen, 2020 Stuzle, 2013 Barkov, 2011 Huberdeau, etc... at 3OA

Finally someone who tells it how it is. Must be nice to be the Oilers and draft Draisaitl at 3 OA and we get stuck with Chucky & KK 😂

2012 was just unlucky. Galchneyuk prolly was best pick at the time. Historically weak draft class. Then trading for another underachiever in Drouin from 2013. KK looked like a reach. Time will tell.

There’s always luck involved in the lottery / drafting. But good player development / scouting is very important

Reality has set in, Price's dominant years are long gone, defence is too slow, coaching system doesn't allow for a free reign offence, and special teams are atrocious. Maybe with a massive coaching change and more Jake Allen they'd be better but they're just lacking intensity.

Yeah 2012 was a brutal year all around. Even at this point I don't even know who the habs shld have picked since they needed a C so bad that year. Most likely should have traded down but who knows if anyone even wanted to move up because of how bad the talent was in that draft... The Drouin trade was a move that needed to be made at the time because again, we needed a C and it was viewed that he could move to the middle for us but that has backfired terribly. All in all, I just wish we had more luck like instead of winning the lottery and going from 4th to 3rd, we'd get at least 2nd lol

It can't just be a coincidence that when Julien got sick and had to take a leave of absence last year during the play-in/playoffs, the team got better and was more dynamic with a younger more progressive Muller behind the bench. Also doesn't help that the habs are fkn awful in OT and SO and have the 2nd worst home record in the last 2 seasons. Julien is awful with the last change...

Spot on. The worst thing Bergevin could've done was res-sign Price. He should've sent him to a contender in his final year, gotten a boat load back and saved himself and the franchise that ludicrous contract. They're going to end up looking like jerks by buying him out

I agree that they're better off without Julien but I don't think Muller is the answer - their powerplay is historically bad under Muller and that is his job. I'd lean more toward Dom. Ducharme to be honest or even take a look at Gerard Gallant.

He raises a valid point..... to an extent.

The Habs have been off to these torrid starts for 5 seasons, only to stumble and waffle theor way thru the rest of the season to miss the playoffs. Here we go again. Hence the question to blow it up.

Where I disgaree is in blowing it up. From what I see, this team, far and away, is the best Canadiens team on the ice in over a decade. Bergevin, at last, has given his coaching staff real depth to work with. 3 lines that can score. A blueline that is good at keeping the puck out of the net.

At this point, I don't think the issue is the players. I think it's the coach. Julien isn't the guy to get them over the hump.

Now, if the slide continues, moving Tatar is a must happen. Moving Danault is a must happen. These are substantial assets that will garner a good price on the market.

But right here, right now? This is on Julien's head imo

Muller is definitely NOT the answer, I was just showing how the team got better without Julien and his old dead ways behind the bench... I would bring up Joel Bouchard and have Ducharme go down to help bring up the kids in Laval.

Oh I know. Just because I am a Leafs fan doesn't mean I point this stuff out for the sake of a hate on.

This team is much better than its currently showing. Should be pushing the Leafs atop the division.

And I think all is not lost. Caufield looks so good. Brook will be that guy on the back end that has been missing since Subban (or so it appears). Ylonen as a future 3rd line C is perfect.

You can see how this is going to line up.

You really think Brook is that good? I don't even think he'll make the nhl and if he does, my guess is he'll be a #6-7 dman. Ylonen shld be a decent bottom 6 tho hopefully ya

A solid two way defender that can skate? Yeah, I think he has the game. Keep in mind, defensemen take longer to marinate. Not all are a Romanov.

As a Leafs fan, I point out it took Liligren two years in the AHL to find his offensive game. Brook will find his. Patience.

But hey, if you don't want him, give Dubas a call! Lol

      Good question.

At this point a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Leafs are thin in the prospect dept right now.
