Subban

Created by: truculence67
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 24, 2021
Published: Feb. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trouba has not played up to his contract whatsoever but he’s only 26 and has shown that he has the potential to be a top-20 dman in the nhl. It is undeniably a risky deal for New Jersey, but the devils have oodles of cap space for the next few years and zero depth on the right side after severson and maybe Reilly Walsh. A change of scenery might be exactly what trouba needs to find his game again, and if he can, the devils add a huge piece on the backend that a lot of other teams with great young forward pieces have spent years trying to find (hello Toronto).

From the rangers point of view, they have a plethora of stellar d prospects but are going to have some big cap problems in 2-3 years when all of their young guys become RFA’s. If trouba doesn’t improve by then, his contract will be unmoveable (especially with a full NMC so it will be better to cut their losses on trouba now while he still has value as a reclamation project than trying to do so down the road. Subban is a nice veteran stopgap on the second pair until Schneider and lundkvist are NHL ready.

God no. Trouba contract is one of the worst in hockey and he’s signed for 6 more seasons. Subbans is done after next year.

Rangers decline. Subban's cooked, and Trouba is a Top 4 Dman, and will almost certainly be one for the duration of his contract. Realistically, Lundkvist is trade bait and Schneider is multiple years off from being a viable Top 4 option, and the Rangers have no one else in house to fill that slot.

Did you really just say that Lundkvist is trade bait.

Trouba’s wife is a doctor in New York or something and he has a full NMC so don’t see him waiving for any team other than the devils or islanders

I agree that Trouba has the chance to bounce back, but the Devils shouldn't take that risk. The term really kills that contract. A couple years down the line when the Devils need to pay Hughes, Bratt, Blackwood, etc, Trouba's big contract may hurt the Devils

I don’t really see any young guys on the devils breaking the bank as rfa’s (by that I mean rantanen/marner/matthews money) and New Jersey doesn’t have any long-term expensive veterans on their roster either. So I think the devils are actually in a very sound situation cap wise. The rangers on the other hand already have 18 million locked up in panarin and Kreider, zibanejad and buchnevich will get fat new extensions and they have another 4-5 great young players coming off ELCs in the next two years. Plus a ****load of dead money on the books.

I agree. Devils have so much cap space. But I rather see the Rangers suffer with their horrible contracts terms

Do people not know about Jacob Trouba's massive improvement this year? His analytics are really solid. His current WAR/xWAR pace puts him at being worth 5.2 mil this season over 1500 mins played. If he's able to continue something like that he'll be a -18 mil surplus value relative to cap for the lifetime of his contract.

Let's compare that with Subban. At his current pace, he's worth -18.1 mil over 1500 mins played. At his current cap hit that puts him worth -27 mil EACH SEASON.

Even if you account for some possible Trouba regression, This isn't really a conversation regardless of term lol.
