What an absolute horrible take. The north contains 5 playoff teams 4 that made major improvements. No real whipping boy in the division either as Ottawa has proven they can be very tough to play against.

Ovi is a goal scorer who diesn’t defend. Matthews is a complete package centre. What a very basic way to look at things.

This is the old debate, is it for the best player or the player that does the most for his team? There is no question McDavid is the best player, but do other guys do more to get their team further along? Honestly I don't know.

Without McDavid, I would think Edmonton is 6th in the division and a bottom 5 team overall. Without Matthews TO is still much better than Edmonton. I guess I am talking myself into saying McDavid likely deserves the Hart all the time. Lol.

The reality is, they won't give it to him every year. People like different stuff each year.

Is Matthews even the Leafs MVP? Marner is outscoring him and having a greater impact on both GF and GA at 5v5. He also kills penalties (with reasonable effectiveness, too) and leads the team in on-ice GF/60 on the powerplay. Matthews gets all the headlines, I get it, but if you look at the data Marner is more important to the team.

At this point our team is mostly young talent, so of-course taking away like 7-8 players would make us really bad. However, I think in the league MVP conversation Kane should be a front runner. I think people might be forgetting that we are without our top 2 centers (Toews and Dach) and have been killed by a lot of injuries this year. I dont know what the situation with Edm or Tor has been concerning injuries, but what Kane has done so far is special. He is on similar pace in points to his other hart season and that's without the supporting cast he had last time.

Matthews is a leader and also way better defensively than McDavid. McDavid is the best offensive player on the planet and he's so much better at that, that he separates himself from everyone else. However, without the puck, Matthews is better, it's not even debatable. McDavid is not know for his defence.

Looking for more information to fit your opinion I see. Matthews is the best player in TO. He is their best goal scorer and best defensive player and a big time leader. Marner is great but he will never be as good as Matthews. Centres do more, end of debate.

Worst division in the league and by the end they won't make the playoffs. Feel good while you can but Chicago isn't a surprise team they are just better against Detroit, Nashville and Columbus.

They are not even, not remotely close to even. Matthews has been elite defensively. With Thornton and Marner they have allowed 1 goal against this season. Matthews is 3rd in the league in take aways and back checks as hard as he tries to score goals. McDavid waits for lose pucks to take off down ice with his speed. It works for McDavid because he can give up a tonne of chances but makes good on his more so.

Agreed. The main sticking point in the debate, for me anyway, is that Matthews has played with another MVP caliber talent in Marner 86% of the time 5v5 while McDavid has been with Drai 12% of the time.

Matthews doesn't PK and has less effect on both GF and GA than Marner. Matthews takes faceoffs and scores the goals that Marner sets him up for. Marner plays 1:00 more per game... how is that doing less?

It seems like just a week ago they were saying marner is a better player than Mcdavid. But then mcdavid pulled away in points so now defence is a thing.

You are literally wrong on all accounts here. You can argue a lot of things but if you think Matthews isn’t a 200 foot player or he needs anyone to carry him you haven’t watched a game.
