Does Makar kill penalties? How is he defensively? He's got a lot of Norris votes and I just want to make sure we're not having another offensive defenseman winner.

He could, he's much better at defense than the likes of Burns, Q.Hughes and Carlson.

I don't think he does because the Avs have other options but he easily could IMO

hes solid defensively, he is a complete Dman and not just an offensive Dman like Hughes. He puts up the points by playing rock solid D

He does PK a bit but Avs have a lot of Dmen for that in Graves Girard Johnson and Toews. when healthy lin up he wont PK so it keeps his minutes under control since he plays a a lot of PP and 5v5

He shouldn't qualify for the Norris then IMO. I'm so sick of that trophy being handed to guys who are amazing offensively when there are a lot of players that are amazing defensively and offensively.

Hedman, McAvoy, and Doughty should be the front runners. Not guys like Makar and Hughes.

If that's the case, let's just add another two trophies 1 for offense 1 for defense and throw away the Norris.

makar is good at both ends, his defensively metrics are off the charts as well. You have a false narrative about Makar

It's crazy to me that during the covid pause we argued about Makar vs Hughes

It's not even close, Makar>>>>

I would be open for a split

Norris trophy: awarded to the d-man that showed the best defensive capabilities
Bobby Orr trophy: awarded to the d-man that showed the d-man that showed the best offensive capabilities

Also nah disagree, Makar is very solid at defense, he's not just offensive

I think Fox is a better overall Dman than Hughes. Hughes is an elite offensive talent on the back end but his Defence is sketchy.

Wow, he truly is awesome lmao. I remember him at the 2018 WJC just destroying the tournament while barely playing lol

Yeah! 100% agreed. In terms of the best young d-men(drafted in 2017 onwards), you got, IMO:
1A: Heiskanen
1B: Makar
2: Dahlin
3:Fox
4-Hughes

Makar is 3rd in TOI on the PK for Avs defensemen. That would change if Johnson were ever healthy, but the point is he does kill penalties. Not only that but he has the best xGA per 60 of all dmen with any significant pk time.

He's a complete defenseman. Any metric will show that, and the eye test will too. He currently looks to be a Norris candidate for years to come.

That's all fine and good, but if he was that good defensively, why isn't he on the PK? Seeing how he and Johnson are their only RD lol. Not counting Timmons bc he's a rookie and the word is he's been making a lot of "rookie mistakes"

IMO a Norris candidate/nominee should be on the #1 pair, playing #1 minutes, #1 PK unit, solid +/- and shut down performance, and maintain consistent offensive production.

Makar is awesome defensively. He plays a ton of 5v5 and pp. for this reason he is not killing penalties. Not because he couldn’t.

He improved his defensive game big time from last year. Him or Girard should fight for the last spot on PK2, Johnson and Toews on PK1 and Graves and (Makar or Girard) on PK2. If Johnson is still injured put Makar on PK2 and Girard on PK1

Makar is good defensively but Avs have other guys they'd rather have blocking shots with their ankles than him.

Carlson is much better defensively than Burns or Q. Hughes. And actually does kill penalties.

Over the last five seasons, he's 32nd in short handed time on ice among defensemen. A couple of good offensive guys are ahead of him in that, but just two or three that are anywhere close to Carlson on offense. http://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?report=penaltykill&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20152016&seasonTo=20192020&gameType=2&position=D&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=shTimeOnIce&page=0&pageSize=100

I don't have a Norris vote to give, but Carlson would have mine.
