I don't think you can risk putting Maatta or MacDermid on waivers. They have those guys signed through 2022 to satisfy the exposure requirement for defensemen. Unless you plan on leaving Pettersson unprotected, both Maatta and MacDermid need to stay on the roster. They can run with 8 defensemen for the rest of the season or send Bjornfot back to Ontario and it would still work, but M&M can't be on the taxi squad.

Pens pass. I loved prime carter but he doesn’t make sense on pit now. I’d rather keep our defensive depth

Fair enough. Not sure if you've been following or not, but Carter has been doing very good so far this year and his teammates have stated that he's the fastest he's ever been in his career. Doughty was describing to NHL Network that in training camp, Carter literally flew right by him and that doesn't happen to Doughty often.

Take that for what it's worth, but this totally seems like something Hextall would do.

Fun fact, when the Kings traded Johnson for Carter in 2012, Hextall played a big part in it and convinced Lombardi that trading Jack Johnson and calling up Voynov would work out just fine on the backend.

Maybe he feels that way with Joseph and Pettersson, who knows. He loves Jeff Carter though and I think Carter would fit perfectly with Crosby probably Malkin too.

I think that there's a deal here, but as @tkecanuck341 points out, it wouldn't be for a defenseman. I'm envisioning something more along the lines of Carter for Legare.

That would likely be a no go from the pens too. The pens are going to need to rely on Poulin and Legare next year. They only have like 2-2.5 million in cap space. Likely 5 at most after the expansion draft with 7 contracts to sign. That includes Blueger who should get a decent raise and ZAR who will get around what he is getting now. So you’re looking at roughly 2 - 2.5 million for 5 players. Likely going to have to trade Dumoulin for draft picks and rely on MP, Matheson, POJ, Riikola, and Lee for the LD.

No team relies on unproven prospect for roster issues. Poulin could possibly make the jump, but Lagare is far from NHL ready.

Is that why the pens relied on John Marino and Teddy Blueger last year? Is that why they relied on Connor Sheary, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust during the cup years (who were huge parts of that team playing top 6 minutes), is that why POJ is playing on the top pair with Letang this year? Is that why Jarry took over for Murray for much of last season? Is that why Murray took over for fleury in the playoffs for the two cup runs?

Those guys were ready lol Legare isn't... Poulin might be..... Do you know who your GM is? This is a trade he would do.

When they traded for Marino they didn’t expect him to jump into the nhl right away. They expected at least a year or two in the Ahl.
Poulin and Legare literally have identical stats in the Q. Yes I know who my gm is. He’s the guy that built a team around Giroux and coots by building through the draft and young players. No teams gm’s are making trades like this because of the expansion draft and flat cap. My gm and Burke have both said they are going to build a talented young team around Crosby, Malkin, and Letang to extend the window. Not slam it shut by trading youth for over the hill players. Like I said they could have had Henrique for free. If they were going to make a move like that, they’d have already gone that route.

I’m guessing it happened at practice this morning, they are pretty transparent about injuries. No idea of timeline.
