Hertl part 2 - 2020-21

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 24, 2021
Published: Feb. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This roster is the 2021-22 follow-up from this AGM which was for the 2020-21 season: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/421801?post_id=2143566

2021 OFFSEASON:

- Newhook replaces Saad
- O'Connor and Bowers replace Bellemare and Calvert.
- Graves gets taken by Seattle and is replaced by a cheap UFA or via trade.
- If overages / performance bonuses create a cap problem, then unfortunately Johnson would need to get bought out or traded (likely with some retention).

Expansion Draft protection (7+3+1):
- Mackinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Hertl, Burakovsky, Kadri, Nichuskin
- Makar, Girard, Toews
- Grubauer

Exposed: Donskoi, O'Connor*, Graves, Johnson (waives NMC), Francouz

* O'Connor needs to play another 22 of the next 41 games to reach the 27 game threshold to meet the criteria as one of the two forwards exposed, but he should easily reach that as 12th or 13th forward. If he doesn't then Nichuskin gets exposed instead.

COL
  1. Hertl, Tomas ($1,125,000 retained)
Additional Details:
+ Nieto.

*** Trade at 2021 deadline. ***

Avs get a 2C in his prime for 2 playoff runs.

Nieto is included to balance contracts and give the Avs a cheap depth player after moving 3 forwards out.
SJS
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Jost, Tyson [RFA Rights]
  3. Kaut, Martin
  4. Timmins, Conor [RFA Rights]
  5. 2021 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
San Jose receive:
- 2 RHS RW's (Kaut and Compher) which fills SJ's biggest need given that the only RHS on their team is Labanc);
- a young bottom 6 forward with excellent defense and PKing (Jost);
- an NHL ready RHD with top 4 projection.
- 1st round pick

Ages: Compher (25), Timmins (22), Jost (22), Kaut (21).

All these players are at a perfect age for San Jose, as they can all jump straight into the lineup immediately, thereby allowing San Jose to rebuild on the fly without waiting several years for draft picks or younger prospects to mature.

You arent getting Hertl without Newhook + a first to start. Compher is a dump and not a small one, and Jost is booty. Kaut and Timmins arent bad but just depth pieces

I don't think he'll be in the NHL next season, but yes he needs to get signed. As do a few other guys too. Added them to the "signings" for you Heart Eyes

You're probably right about Newhook having to be included. It's the obvious piece to include, but I don't think Sakic would do it. His ELC is just too valuable to us as a contender. Moving him would also mean that we'd have to resign Hertl or Kadri in 2022 which would be super expensive with Mackinnon and Byram's raises coming up in 2023.

If you prefer Avs can add the 2022 1st as well instead of one of Kaut/Timmins. That would actually work better for Colorado as they could use those cheap ELC contracts now.

Compher might be a bad contract but some money would have to go SJ's way. You could change it to Donskoi if you prefer that.

Hertl ($1.125m retained) for Compher/Donskoi + 2021 1st + 2022 1st + Jost + Timmins/Kaut/Bowers. Feel free t mix it up if you like, everything is on the table except for Newhook.

As a Sharks fan I'd mostly agree. I really like Jost might be my bias. Possibly make it a 2022 1st because this class is a little week, and add like a 4 or 5th in 2021. I don't agree with the people that say this is off, this is pretty good.

Im sorry but I just dont see it without a Newhook level prospect. The Avs are going to be great for years to come so those firsts are both late. Very little reason to do a quantity deal when the sharks could find a quality one

It's tough for the Sharks to be enticed by those picks though because with Hertl I don't see the Avs reaching anything less than the conference final. The Sharks would probably want something more guaranteed (Newhook), or they'd probably go to a team whose picks would be more valuable (like a bubble team that's trying to push for the playoffs)
