Why would we want Monahan? He doesnt make the team better and we should be tanking and getting younger if we trade Meier

I disagree hard on the idea of tanking. There's never a guarantee that a team can pull out of a tank, and the Sharks shouldn't ever lose by choice.

What part is the bad deal? Looks like upside for everyone. The only risk is Virtanen, but I think he'd do incredibly well in our system and culture.

I would love Marleau back. He's great for the locker room, he'd defensively responsible, he's reliably like 0.25ppg on a minimum contract, he's a legacy Shark... Lot's of upside.

No the no tank was to the comments not the roster, and Marleau has been playing better and better each game there have been easily 5/6 solid scoring chances the last few games where he was just unlucky, those will start to go in here as the season progresses!!!

Can they? Unless we're talking about putting Virtanen into a bigger trade to sweeten things, I have a hard time believing any team would pay much more than this for a 24 year old who doesn't play defense, has terrible all-around metrics and 1 point in 18 games this season. That's just me though.

I don't see the team trading him away when his value is very low, they have spent to much time with his development and being patient with him to turn his game around. Most likely scenario will be for another player looking for a change of scenery (Sam Bennett etc.)

Fair enough. I don’t disagree with any of those points and a change of scenery type of trade does make a lot of sense.

They totally could've gotten a 2nd+ if they traded him in the offseason, but they didn't. They signed for too much money and he's under-performed in their system, so now they'd be lucky to get a 3rd.

Not likely at all. Hertl is the most popular player on the team and probably the next captain.

I agree. But the amount of time they have invested into him I just can't see the organization shipping him out when his value is an all time low.

They'd be crazy not to get him off their books ASAP, but making wise, timely decisions doesn't seem to be in their wheelhouse these days.

Toffoli > Virtanen
Markstrom > Holtby
Tanev > Schmidt

For the first time ever last post-season I was excited for and proud of VAN. Now I'm just another witness to their rapid, abrupt and unceremonious downfall. I don't get it!

Toffoli they should have kept. The rest VAN couldn't afford to hand out massive contracts when Pettersson , Hughes are up for contracts also they did not want to lose Demko in the expansion draft since Markstrom wanted a full NMC.

This is a real case of "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". They had a window and they had the team to meet the moment, and they flushed it away because they were so worried about Demko and other contracts that were two seasons from then's problem.
The real crime is Benning's reluctance to get out of bad contracts for fear of upsetting the bottom-line. The dude refuses to retain salary!
Sure, he had to wait a year to buyout Loui, but he could've traded Sutter and Beagle and retained some salary, traded Virtanen and Gaudette, put Ferland on the LTIR (did that), acquire another player to put on LTIR, and kept a tough, winning team together. Winning attracts winners, and if the team was able to keep their SC window open, then those upcoming RFAs would've likely been more than happy to take bridge deals in order to win. I hate using Boston for a good example of anything, but they do that and it works very well for keeping their window open.
