Just a what if, if we got Draisaitl instead of Bennett. The Doguie, ferland, fox <-> Hanifin, Lindholm trade could of happened. We probably wouldnt of needed to sign neal.

Is this team a consistent contender?

You know there is a possibility due to this we don't get Tkachuk because we are better right?

And if we didn't sign Neal we wouldn't have Lucic or EDM 3rd

We also definitely still do that Lindholm trade 10/10 times. Fox refused to sign in Calgary

Imagine that center depth if Lindholm was at center... Draisaitl, Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund. This means we may not have gone for Ryan. Would this be right?

Yea the butterfly effect implications are huge. Drais first full season wasn't until 15-16 though and at that point he wasn't a 100 point player. Drai had 51 points that year and Bennett had 36 points.

Drai might never of turned into the player he is if he was developed like Bennett and not playing with McD.

But hypotheically if we still got Chuky, this would be a legit contender

Well we probably would put Lindholm at wing or trade Monahan. Ryan was a Peters guy, he probably requested we sign him as part of the deal when he was hired so he knew he had a reliable bottom six C + good PKer (Quenneville did a similar thing, his signing in Florida was conditional on them getting a goalie, unfortunately for him Bob proceeded to suck afterwards lol).

Yea I would still do the lindholm trade forsure. Our cap structure would be much different though.

I duno if we could afford Ryan if our centers were Drai + Money + Backs lol. Good problem to have tho

Would be unreal. Yea I doubt they sign Ryan as 4th line center for that price when we already have that much money down the middle.

The Lindholm Hanifin trade was terrific. Maybe if Fox wanted to stay and we got Drai I wouldn’t do it, but in reality, best move this team has made since drafting Gaudreau. That’s 8 years

Not to mention valimaki would be -120 in his career by now if he weren’t injured and playing top 4.

I think lindholm + Hanafin for Dougie (which is what this trade boiled down to) was great for the flames and I like their current defence over this iteration. Let’s face it... if you have dougie you don’t sign tanev.

Why do you think Valimaki would be doing so bad

He is -8 playing 3rd pair sheltered minutes. Imagine him in the top four for the last couple of years. Not a big fan. He’s an okay bottom pair guy, but he has a lot of things to improve before he gets anywhere near a top 4 spot.

While I agree on still doing the Dougie trade and that Valimaki isn't top 4 ready yet, I don't think he is that far off. He's had 1 or 2 noticeably bad games this year but otherwise has been progressing well. I also think the injuries severely hurt his development path. Where he sits right now should line up very nicely with swapping top 4 roles with Gio in the near future

Okay, but we all know how useless of a stat +/- is. I believe he was-3 vs Montreal and -3 vs Edmonton. Without those two games, he’s -2. Personally, I think that if he could clean up the inconsistency and be better at net front defensively, he’s a top pair guy. He hasn’t been too sheltered either, from the eye test, not sure about advanced stats, but he hasn’t been doing as bad as his +/- indicates

He certainly has been sheltered. He is as bad as his -8. If he is ever going to be a decent top pair player he needs to learn to skate as well. He’s still young and I’m not writing him off. But he has more than just a bit of maturing to work on.
