The Sharks 3 Paths - PT3 - lets rebuild

Created by: yikes
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 24, 2021
Published: Feb. 26, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The best option imo

Hertl trade happens at 2020-21 TDL (could swap Ty out for another just thought Ty projects to be a middle 6/ bottom 6 guy with upside so seemed like a fair prospect to grab due to Harley being a great grab)
Burns gone (no biggy if he stays doesn’t affect my rebuild)
Meier goes for equal or more value then Hertl

Please read the trade description, has nothing to do with Buffalo directly - they’re a placeholder

A rebuild is definitely what the sharks need, and a few other teams too. I think keeping Meier would be smart though as he’s still super young, and that’s a player that you should build around. Your good young players you should be keeping.

Probably best long term but painful. I actually wrote a whole article about this (shameless plug I know) (https://thehockeywriters.com/sharks-rebuilding-options-gambling-shedding-salary-full-rebuild/). I had a limit so I couldn't expand more, but this makes the most sense. Honestly I think we should move Kane before Hertl (the only argument is injury). Our depth of wingers is currently much better and able to replace him, unless Labanc and Meier are traded. I mean all 25 and younger we have the following top 6/9 guys that could make the roster next season: Meier Labanc Donato Leno Blichy Dahlen Chekhovich Gregor Balcers and I'm guessing I miss some. I've structured rebuilds differently, but I don't disagree with this method.

I think moving Donato and Labanc makes little sense, I'd want one just because I think they both have more to give and Labanc could be a long time player

2022 picks...for TBL (late), DET, BUF picks (am guessing both between 8-16)

1 D prospect: Simon Nemec or Tristan Luneau
              1 sniper prospect: Ike Howard
Late 1st/ early second ranked goalie of there is one or BPA: Gibson Homer or the Elias kid from Slovakia

Loaded draft...those picks will be expensive

I think this is the best in every way but I disagree that Kane is better to move. Hertl is more appealing I think but more so I think Kane is just so hard to handle. I like him and hate him, and he’s a hard sell. We fleeced Buffalo for him but I doubt we could sell him high. A better way to put it would be a team would need to buy him from us; they’d need to be the ones chasing him. And that situation I can’t predict so I just leave Kane with us for now. Since I know many teams would love Hertl it’s easy to project.

And I actually had kept Labanc but I just wanted Sillinger in our pool; but yeah we’re on the same page there!

The Detroit pick would be a team on the come up so a playoff team so more likely 12-18 and Buffalo would be any team dumping a contract so it could be 12-18 or 18-28.

I think most are fair moves to acquire those firsts. Definitely will be a exciting draft especially if we hold both drafts in the same week. Could result in a ton of movement we haven’t seen before.

Value may be fair, but I don't see Dallas making any moves that significantly impact their youth. They are currently one of the oldest teams in the NHL & are on the verge of needing to begin a rebuild. Keeping Harley, Dellandrea, and the 1st Round Pick make the rebuild a little easier to stomach & hopefully speeds up the process. Losing all 3 of them elongates the rebuild.

Given the current state of the Stars, I just don't see a trade like this happening.

I do appreciate the optimism for Detroit but have you seen them play? Detroit will be in the bottom 5 next season. It's not just their play its the teams around them are getting better as well.

He’s just using us as a placeholder. No one in their right mind is saying Detroit will be a bubble team in 2022. Detroit also doesn’t make sense for the fact wingers are strength vs D and C.

I like this option a good bit but one nitpicky change I would make is trading Meier to DAL instead of Hertl. Meier was at his peak when he was playing with Pavs I think they would probably hit it off better than Pavs-Hertl. But yeah I don't mind any of these moves - this seems like the best option as of now.
