      Additional Details:
Weber is owed peanuts for the last few years of his contract. He'll be 37 at the beginning of the 2022-23 season and his body has went through a lot. It's unlikely, but for the sake of this post let's say he pulls a Byfuglien.

I'm no expert on salary cap subtleties, but from what I recall, the recapture penalty has been diminished under the new CBA and it's on Nashville.

That's a no for the Sabres...Ullmark is 6 yrs younger, having a better season and can be resigned at a much cheaper salary.

i dont believe its diminished. isnt luongo still taking the canucks cap space for his retirement? either way, if its still there, nashville suffers, not mtl.

It's quite recent, and I think the new rule only applies to the few contracts elligible (Carter, Keith, Suter, Parise, Weber, etc.)

The recapture pentalty is indeed on Nashville: it was stipulation of the orginial deal between Nashville and Montreal in the Subban for Weber trade. If I were Nashville, I certainly wouldn't want him to retire.

they'll have to trade back for him if im not mistaken and put him on LTIR or something because his cap will count against nashville's cap. idk waht the league will allow, but mtl can get a decent return for weber

I didn't know that! WOW! That. Is. HILARIOUS! This could potentially crush the Preds (not that I want to see them get crushed, but wow, that's not a good sign). Bergevin (or, more likely, the Hab's next general manager) would really be able to get a decent return for that.

I've been saying this since we traded for weber and fans complained about his contract. mtl does not suffer in any way. its either the preds, or the preds negotiate somehting with the nhl.

I completely agree with this. Hindsight is 20/20, but Bergevin looks like he made a pretty great deal. Even if Weber doesn't win a Cup here, he has been and continues to be an outstanding leader.

Thankfully for Nashville, the recapture penalty has been lowered. If he had retired in 2025-26 under the previous CBA, it would have been a 24.571.428m$ recapture penalty for 1 season. Now, if he retires in the same year, it's 7,857,143 for 3 seasons. It's still insane, but it's better manageable.

Thank you, @SevenLeg , for this information: it's fascinating. $24,571,428 is comically high (30% of the current Cap, to be exact), but $7,857,143 per season, while still insane, is more manageable. Think about this: Victor Hedman makes slightly more than that.

the culture change he brought was outstanding. i mean even if the habs win with a new core, that includes primeau in net and price as a back-up etc, his leadership is an example for all the younger guys.
