defense sell off coming

Created by: pharrow
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2021
Published: Feb. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Penguins are sellers at TDL even if they make the playoffs. With Zucker probably out and the team not really having assets to burn to make a move, they sell some assets and go with what they got. They simply aren't real cup contenders this year and it's better to build than self decive.
They don't have a ton of assets to sell but they have depth on the blue line they can part with,
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
I would have taken a 4th here but WPG doesn't have one. They will need defensive depth going forward. Ceci can PK and can be a physical guy on their blueline in a 3rd pairing role or depth man if needed. The cost of a 3rd isn't much at all.
2.
PIT
  1. 2021 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
I think this is a solid move for AZ.
1st, it gives them solid depth down the LD side if they make the playoffs.
2nd They only got 2 guys under contract next year on their whole blueline.
3rd there were rumors of an OEL trade last offseason. Lets say AZ really does want to move on, This gives them a solid options for a 2LD. For a team that would only have 1 D man signed for next year if OEL is traded, that's a solid move.
Especially given the age of their blueline.
Goligoski is gonna be 36 and Hjalmarsson 34.
It helps them get younger on their blueline.
3.
PIT
  1. 2021 5th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
With Friedman in Chad is gone.
TOR could use some depth on their RD.
The contract is league min, and 2 years. Neither of which should be a problem for TOR.

There are so many ways Arizona could get younger on the blue line without trading away their much needed 2nd round pick for an average defenseman on an albatross contract. Ryan Murray got traded this offseason for a 5th round pick, he's a UFA and a better option than Matheson. There's Brandon Montour too. Ain't anyone giving up a high pick for Matheson.

A. I think you under rate Matheson.
B. he's not a rental, he's coming with term. And as much as you view that as bad, it's not.
C. I think you are over estimating the Defense market next year. The league is already very thin at defense in general. there are many teams in need of it. Next you get 6 more defense positions are opening up, making the league even thinner. And Seattle is gonna grab defense from a few teams. Which means whatever else is out there, everyone else is going to be over bidding on.
AZ is in the same bad position as DET. Who doesn't really have a lot of defensemen going into next year. They need to get younger and faster.
Finding that many defensemen to improve is not going to be easy in the current climate. That's just something you are going to have to realize.
This is why Gudbranson kept getting moved when everyone wanted to hate on him. The league is just thin and that is going to get worse.
Matheson is a much better player than he was. He went for a 5th this summer. Matheson should probably return a 2nd as he can actually play 2LD and that is roughly what a low end 2LD costs. Where a higher one is going to cost a 1st +.
So the value here really isn't off, and AZ won't have nearly as easy of a time picking up defense next year unless they want to go with their very old players.

Coyotes need RD not LD and as mentioned above they’re not giving up a second round pick for Matheson

Ceci isn't worth anywhere close to a 4th and the Jets have no need for bottom pairing or lower defensemen.
