Cap Situation and Sergachev Solution

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2021-22 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2021
Published: Feb. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's suppose Seattle obliges Tampa and takes one of the Lightning's big-hit forwards off their hands. That still doesn't solve Tampa's cap problem, because with Nikita Kucherov back, they have 16 players under contract with only $1,783,333 in cap space. So this trade might be necessary.

I've been kicking around variations of this idea with my friend ZiggyPalffy. We both agree that it would be great for the Kings, good for the Lightning, and unlikely to happen in real life. But it's fun to think about.

In the main trade, Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Tyler Madden are alternatives to Akil Thomas (who's right-handed), and there are a wide variety of bottom-6 forwards available as alternatives to Blake Lizotte.

I mean ZiggyPalffy was the one who named CoopsTroops a moron first.

Protecting Palat means exposing one of Cernak or Foote, and that's who Seattle would take with no prompting.

I would do a 7-3-1 and Chose Cernak over McDonagh which I don't think he worth $6,750,000 just to play defense defensemen, and foote don't worry about him we bring in a 1st and some prospect to get rid of a guy like Johnson,

Good luck with that. For your sake, I hope that happens. (But why am I sympathizing with the current Stanley Cup holders for someone to solve their problems?)

4-4 protect Cirrelli, Stamkos, Kucherov, Point
Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak,Foote Vasy core there. If Seattle doesn't want to deal take your pick only loosing 1 then. If you could use wonder womans golden lasso and force the thruth out if JBB He perfect case is Seattle just picks McDonagh ( granted without serious persuasion isn't happening.) Most realistic is Johnson + i still think Goncalves + 3& 5 do it

they'll probably take Joseph playing 11 minutes per game if that happens RN, they make him play 18 minutes and Some how have him put up around 0.75 PPG next season

This is exactly how I would go. Seems obvious to me. Then Seattle takes Killorn, flips him to a contender for a second, and you're cap screwed with more than $15 million tied up in Gourde, Johnson and Palat.

Goodrow and Coleman are going to be paid far more than what we can afford, with or without Sergachev on the roster. There's no price in prospects or draft capital that won't be paid to open up the cap space to be compliant with Kucherov back next year.

As for Sergachev, you grossly undervalue him. Already producing at a higher 5v5 pace than Hedman and defense that is on the high end of 22 year olds in the NHL. He is the future of the defense and team, and to think we would be content with trading him because we still have McDonagh as a #2 is absurd. We'll cross the McDonagh bridge with a buyout, likely, down the line, but trading Sergachev might as well be JBB handing in his resignation papers to the owner.

Yeah, there are plenty of ways that Tampa makes this work, and none of them include moving Sergachev. I do disagree about Goodrow though, as I believe Tampa has a chance of keeping him. Johnson, Killorn and probably Coleman are gone, but Goodrow I can see staying. After Kucherov comes back, Tampa will only need to have 2 new regulars, and Barre-Boulet, Colton and Smith all have the potential to grab spots going forward.

Not screwed really, as Tampa likely pays to have Seattle take Johnson, and if not, then it'll be another team among the 20 Tampa can work with. Something like 11 teams made deals with Vegas, so I'm sure if Brisebois wants to have the Kraken take a certain player/not take a specific guy then a deal can get done. Tampa has little interest in moving either Gourde or Palat, barring a deal too good to pass up for Palat. Coleman walks since some team will overpay him, and Tampa focuses on keeping Goodrow. The return of Kucherov more than makes up for one of the 3 losses, and Tampa has several young guys more than ready to move up on basically minimum or close to minimum contracts. Tampa can start next year with 21 or 22 depending on exact contract numbers. The following is a rough draft of how they could look to start next season
    Palat-Point-Kucherov
    ABB/Joseph-Cirelli-Stamkos
    Joseph/ABB-Gourde-Goodrow
    Maroon-Stephens-Volkov
Colton/Smith could also be the 4C and get considerable time.
    Hedman-Rutta
    McD-Cernak
    Serg-Foote
    Borgman/Schenn as a 7
    Vasilevskiy
Back up that is cheaper than McElhinney

    Thanks for the input!

I'm going to work with that lineup as a format for doing another 2021-2022 Lightning team.

Yeah, it's just a rough template and I'm sure there may be a few differences. Tampa certainly will have a couple of tough decisions to make, but they should be able to make it work without trading a core piece like Sergachev.
