Cap Situation and Sergachev Solution

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2021-22 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2021
Published: Feb. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's suppose Seattle obliges Tampa and takes one of the Lightning's big-hit forwards off their hands. That still doesn't solve Tampa's cap problem, because with Nikita Kucherov back, they have 16 players under contract with only $1,783,333 in cap space. So this trade might be necessary.

I've been kicking around variations of this idea with my friend ZiggyPalffy. We both agree that it would be great for the Kings, good for the Lightning, and unlikely to happen in real life. But it's fun to think about.

In the main trade, Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Tyler Madden are alternatives to Akil Thomas (who's right-handed), and there are a wide variety of bottom-6 forwards available as alternatives to Blake Lizotte.

Untouchable lol. As long as Hedman is there, Sergachev is 'touchable'

    Hedman is M-NTC in 22-23.

Seattle is going to be persuaded to take Johnson and if he's playing well it makes a lot of sense for them.i think Gonclaves a 3&5 does it. No chance they pay to Dump Palat a guy who over the last 3 season's has over 70%of his points 5x5 with 1 year on the contract and certainly not a 1 to do so if I'm miraculously wrong

We'll still have to include a first, but the idea we'll be stuck with a bunch of immoveable pieces is overblown.

And he'll be extended 2 years after that.

Because Kings aren't paying a 2OA pick for a guy that has gotten over 40 points once regardless of how many people overvalued Sergachev.

Do you see that much of a difference between Turcotte and Byfield?
2oa in a weak draft vs 5oa in a loaded draft?
Not that draft position matters now, but I cannot imagine much daylight between the two.

    Why not offer Byfield?
As an off-season deal, of course.
If Tampa Bay really needs cap and/or center. Many seem to like him over Turcotte (not saying they're right).

He'll take another two years to develop. I thought the idea of Turcotte plus this year's first plus extras would be better (we wouldn't do more than a 1-for-1 with Byfield).

Last year wasn't a weak draft lol and yes there's a huge difference in terms of ceiling.

If I'm giving up Byfield, it'll be for #1D which Sergachev is not that and I don't believe he will be.

All the more reason to not get so upset about an ACGM entertaining an idea like this right?!

Nobody knows yet on drafts, but 2020 looked pretty bad to me at the time.
Devils had three picks in 1st and I was hoping to move some of them.

NJD will give you Murray if your big game hunting doesn't pan out.

Who said 2020 was a weak draft? They both have quality players and aren’t considered weak in any fashion. Maybe you’re biased at little toward 2019 because you’ve seen an extra year of development or you’re mixing up 2020 with 2021.

2019 was great. 2015 was great. 2003 was great. 2022 will be great.
    2020 was ok...maybe close to 2017 or 2014.
Should have said "weaker"...2012 was weak.

So what makes 2019 great and 2020 okay? Are we talking top end prospects only? Depth of the draft?

I think the extra year of development is creating a little bias here. Yes, 2022 looks like the top end talent of Wright, Savoie, and Lambert is shaping up nicely. 2021 in my eyes doesn’t compare to 2019-2020, 2022 for a clear definite top small grouping of guys.

Depth...measuring by number of impact players.

2019 was great and about 45-deep with potential to be solid, impact guys
2020 was okay...a few impact forwards, but after the 1st half of 1st round, lotta warts. Some sneaky good d-men in 2nd / 3rd.
2021 is okay...probably a good year for a late 1st pick and some guys may fall with limited scouting (but who knows)
2022 is great at the top, with guys you mentioned, but also very deep, McGroarty, Fleming, Nemec, Miro, Casey, Howard, Kemmell, etc etc.
2023 will likely be top-heavy...good at top....thinner later on

I guess we are definitely going to agree to disagree I don’t see 45 forwards in 2019 vs the few in 2020. I see some solid guys through the first couple rounds like 2019. Sucks we can’t see some of their D+1.

Tampa Wouldn't give up Palat In the expansion draft even along with a first-round pick, Johnson is more likely to be in seattle when that happens, and both teams declined in the kings trade.

For a 22 year old defensemen to be going over 40 points when he's never really been higher on the D depth chart than t-3 is insane. Plus his D is solid and improving every year

Protecting Palat means exposing one of Cernak or Foote, and that's who Seattle would take with no prompting.
