Addressing the issue with special teams in the offseason

Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2021
Published: Feb. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TBH, this team has shown signs of being good, I don't think we are that far and don't need to spend a ton to bring in someone big. Let the young players take us to the promised land (Bratt, Jack, Nico, Zacha, Ty Smith, Blackwood, and eventually Holtz), its gonna be tough and thats what 2020-2021 will be all about, getting young players experience, but also surrounding them with vets for future playoffs and to get through rough patches.

Keep everyone but Gusev that is expiring, and maybe trade Butcher if he is a nightly healthy scratch. Bring in a shot blocker, big reason our PK has been bad ever since we lost Andy Greene. We have some of the lowest blocked shots in the league.

**(Given with covid and loss of revenue, I am not sure what contracts will look like exactly, gonna assume the cap stays flat again for next season, not that cap space is an issue with this team, let me know if some contracts are too low or too high)**

Here is how I would rank our forwards for PK - for now:
1. Hischier
2. Zacha
3. Palmieiri
4. Sharangovich
5. Bratt
6. McLeod
7. Bastian
8. Zajac

Zajac just doesn't have the legs for it anymore. But other than Nico, none of the other guys ahead of him can win faceoffs regularly.
If it were up to me, I'd pair Hischier and Palmieri as PK1 and Zacha/Sharangovich as PK2. Bratt/McLeod as PK3.

And if we want a shot-blocking RHD, I'd think Adam Larsson would be our guy.

Yea for sure, I just chose Savard over Larsson because idk if he would come back to NJ after being traded away, but if he did, he would be a perfect fit for sure and would love to see him back here.

Why McLeod and Bastian so low? Mcleod has the best faceoffs on the team (apart from Nico)

Yeah, could move them above Bratt probably (Jesper doesn't block enough shots)

McLeod is a good faceoff guy, having a down year in that area so far. He should improve. Zacha / Sharangovich will win zero faceoffs

I really liked the energy from McLeod and Bastian during the PK. Bratt is a good skater and was solid, but he isn't as defensive as McLeod/Bastian.

Yea like all you guys said, they are great, I kinda just put numbers down didnt really think too in detail, but I definitely can justify them getting more money for sure, they're a great addition to this team.

Also, they should be on the penalty kill.
Devil liked this.
