The reasoning for this post is to show how poor most 10+ contracts are and how scary they can be. Signing a 20-25 year old to 10 mil contract is reasonable if they’re proving themselves. Even then some younger guys signed can go wrong. But anyone near the 30’s/ in them it has been a poor choice almost. Not the players faults but the poor choices to sign long term to that price tag. I would say that price tag makes expectations to high and hurt the players value just because they should be playing like McDavid or Matthews value which very few players can ever do, and expecting a older player to do so for 6-8 years is just to unreasonable. While players may deserve to be paid and rightfully so; it’s to poor of a choice to select as in most cases the odds aren’t in your favour to succeed.

This year Marner has been worth it

Maybe not at first but right now he and matts are on a whole new level

As a Leafs fan, I'd personally switch the ratings on Tavares and Marner.

toews isn't worth his contract right now, and I would say Marner's isn't as bad as people say. He's been really good this year.

Every time I see that EK contract, I remain thankful that Tampa didn't no anything stupid in trading for him and signing him.

Kopitar and toews not worth it currently. Marner honestly is worth it.

Basing it on the term of the contract played out so far. That’s why I’m indifferent on Tavares (mixed overall but still great) whereas Marner (wasn’t amazing last year but still good and now even better) is about the same. Toews is the same, he and Kopi were good for a good chunk of their beginning of the 10mil but now they aren’t really. Once again not the fault of the players and it’s not their faults if they aren’t living up to the price tag. This is just taking their contract overall. Marner has time to become worth it whereas guys like Karlsson, Toews, Kopi will have a harder time to become worth it.

Even from the beginning of their contract's Marner has provided better value. Last season of the big 4, Tavrares was last by a wide margin for Pts/$$ and he holds the same position again. He certainly isn't so good defensively that it offsets that. Given their age, that should continue, with the gap likely widening with each passing season. The only thing that protects Tavares from more scrutiny is his "hometown boy" status. But that's just my opinion.

Interesting to look at how many defenders are overpaid. Like Subban, Vlassic, Karlsson, Burns, Doughty. I guess maybe it takes a more of a physically tole on the body?
