why would the Oilers take on Henrique's contract when they could buyout Neal for cheaper?

why would ANA take on Neal when they could put Henrique on the expansion draft and Seattle would take him for sure.

Why on earth would Seattle take Henrique lol. Neals contract only has 2YL, which makes It much more appealing in terms of awful contracts, Henrique has 4YL. You'd need to add a lot to get rid of Henrique although I don't Anaheim is too concerned about that mid rebuild

because last year he knocked in 26 goals and he's only 32 and their depth at center will be weak.

Kris Russell probably won't waive his NMC unless he gets convinced by Ottawa, which I don't see happening.

They can sign a 3C for probably 2 million this offseason no need to take on such poor contracts. Neal and Kassian are enough.

Edmonton may claim Forsberg when Conroe gets to Winnipeg.

why is the assumption it's a bad contract. The guy has 1 off year and it's bad. He has a history of being a good player who knocks in goals. It didn't just disappear over night.

His cap hit is too high for what they are getting and too long as well. Their cap crunch comes in about 2 years when they need to resign their young defence. They need to just ride out neal's contract and get it off the books instead of making it worse.

The contract is 3 years. He is only 31. There is at least 2 good years there.
If he returns to 26 goals 17 apples 43 points form, his 5.8 cap hit is high...but it's not that high. Considering the teams biggest needs will be center. He's probably one of their best choices.
They won't have much to choose from at center. You hope the guy bounces back. Even if he doesn't, it's only 2 more years. Most teams are protecting 7, and it usually looks like top 6 + 3C.
There won't be much available in the open market as far as top 6 centers.
At some point you actually have to build a team. He might be one of the best C available to them. They probably take it.

They can't take that risk because there is no getting out from underneath it. Neal is almost off the books they can keep him one more year then buy him out. They trade for somebody like Chris Tierney or sign Luke Glendening or somebody like erik haula. The bottom 6 is perfectly fine they just need somebody who can win faceoffs and penalty kill. They Also have a center in Ryan Mcleod who is coming up before long.
