im not sure butcher for white would really be interesting for the sens unless there's a pretty significant piece added, were already super deep at LD and fairly thin at center

Would they have to add at all? I wouldn’t think so.

Kinda think that the sens would be somewhat happy to get white off the books.

That’s what I was thinking, but this is CapFriendly. I thought I would ask opinions just so I don’t get torched in the comments.

Butcher would add more scoring depth on D (5v5 and the PP) for a team that has to out score their mistakes most nights. Adding Boqvist wouldn’t be too big of a deal for me if NJ can also get a pick, which I’m assuming would a 4th or later. I think OTT lacking depth at C would be the biggest issue.

I dont think value is way off but like @Borocop said the fact that Ottawa is deep at LD and thinner at centre would definitely mean that Jersey would have to add something. Boqvist might actually even the value out but the fact that Butcher would essentially still be a third pair dman in Ottawa would mean you might need a bit more than that.

@Bcarlo25 the contract really isn't problematic because Ottawa's cap situation. Someone needs to be getting paid with so many players on rookie contracts. Even with Batherson and Tkachuk getting off their ELC's this offseason the floor will be what the sens are keeping their eye on instead of the ceiling.

I'm confused. If it's not problematic then why would they be happy to get it off the books?

yeah i would agree, swapping butcher for whites contract makes sense for the sens. Kind of depends what their goals are for the team though, if they still want to be competitive (which i think is their goal) i think they just hang onto white as hes playing 2c and we dont really have anyone to slide in and replace that

It’s not you. You’re not on the team. He’s performing poorly compared to his AAV.

At worse, he’s 1.5 mill overpaid. I don’t think it’s much of an issue

I don't know why Ottawa would have any interest in Butcher.

It won’t be an issue for 2 reasons, they might sign another guy to a steal of a contract and it’ll even out. And 2 , we won’t need the cap till maybe the last 2 years of White’s contract and the cap should be up by then

It’s a bad contract. If given a good opportunity to get out from under it, it’s a no brainer.

Value-wise, Butcher for White seems ok to me. But NJD needs to add a LHD, not subject one.

Boqvist needs NHL minutes, which I suspect he will get after deadline.
Nothing left to prove in SHL or AHL, but has shown nothing in NHL.
A change of scenery may be good for him.

If the contract isn’t problematic then why would the team think it’s bad? It doesn’t matter if you think it’s bad because it still serves a purpose for the team regardless of whether or not he’s playing to it’s full potential. Whites playing fine and the team obviously didn’t have a problem handing the contract out so they’re not going to devalue their own asset because of the salary he’s owed. They can afford to look at White in a vacuum without taking his salary into account because the floor and not the ceiling is what the team is paying attention to.

As you said earlier, the reason the contract isn’t problematic is that the sens have cap space. They could add Jeff skinner, and his contract would still be bad even though it doesn’t create a problem for them.

Again, that would make it bad on another team or bad to you and I but still not bad to the team because it serves a purpose. If anything that would just mean that White is more valuable to the Sens than any other team and they would be less likely to see something like Butcher as equal compensation despite the fact that it might be equal in a vacuum.

All that to say it doesn’t matter if it’s bad for Ottawa.

Until it does. Funny how that happens in the NHL.

I understand OTT being thin at C (I don’t watch a lot of OTT hockey and for some reason thought White was at RW), but can someone explain to me how they are deep at LD?

On paper they have Chabot and Reilly and that’s really it. Walonin doesn’t look great, they have 4 RHD rostered, Coburn is 36 on the last year of his deal and spends half his time scratched or on the taxi squad, Brannstrom/Thomson/Docker are all righty’s, and Kleven is still a couple years out. Sanderson is really the only depth I see at LD. With 2 LDs coming off contract this year and Butcher still having a year left it would give OTT flexibility to flip him at the deadline next year or resign him if they want.

Again, I don’t watch a lot of OTT hockey, so I could be completely off here.
