Clarity on Eichel Situation

Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 1, 2021
Published: Mar. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let’s be honest- most fans overvalue their players to some degree. Add in the fact that almost all of us are so emotionally invested in our teams and players that it can cloud our judgement. For example, I see some Buffalo fans basically demanding that Kakko AND Lafreniere be included in a trade for Eichel. On the other hand, I see some Ranger fans hoping they can get away with only giving up a first round pick, a top 6 player and a top prospect.

I think these are some really important points to keep in mind when discussing a potential trade:

- Jack Eichel is worth a TON. He really is and he should be.

- BUF isn’t crazy to ask for either Kakko or Laf as part of a deal.

- BUF can ask for whatever players they want... it doesn’t mean they’ll actually get them, though.

- If Eichel is traded, he might not get full value.

- Once again, BUF SHOULD ask for and get full value in theory, but just because he should doesn’t mean he will. If this were the case there’d be no bad trades in hockey. But we know GM’s make bad moves all the time.

- Buffalo doesn’t have to trade him right now.

- There’s undoubtedly tension between Eichel and management which I think long term puts more pressure on the organization. Teams rarely want a disgruntled player to be a core piece of their future.

- If things continue to deteriorate and they wait until his NMC kicks in after the 2021-22 season, only he can decide where he goes in a trade and that could absolutely kill any leverage that management has in recouping assets.

Final thoughts...

I have no idea what will happen with Eichel, but if we’re being honest it’s looking more and more by the day that he’s unhappy with his situation. This leads me to believe there’s may be a trade this off-season. I’ve just added the very basic starting points of a package below. Keep in mind that if NYR do make an offer- like it or not- they’ll likely do everything in their power to not include Kakko or Laf. Let me know what you think.
Trades
BUF
  1. Buchnevich, Pavel [RFA Rights]
  2. Chytil, Filip [RFA Rights]
  3. Lundkvist, Nils [Reserve List]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (NYR)
  5. 2022 1st round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Once again, not an exact package but I would think this is *generally* what NYR might offer if they aren’t willing to give up Laf/Kakko/Miller, etc.

i like what u said. Eichel is a top 10 centre. He's having a down season in a weird year. Eichel was 10th in scoring last season. Fans know what their getting in eichel. Therefore i think a fair trade would be

Eichel for 2021 1st, Kakko, Chytl, Kravstov, Schnider. you give up 2 players off your current roster for a top 10 centre. if i was a rangers fan i would personally do this trade.

Sends buffalo back into a rebuild with good pieces

I appreciate the feedback. That’s honestly not a crazy ask at all on Buffalo’s part. Eichel is a legitimate superstar in his prime he *should* get a haul. I’m not sure the Rangers management pulls the trigger on it but it’s probably closer to what a deal would look like than most think.

I agree with what you said.
I don’t think there’s any chance Lafreniere gets traded. They just drafted him. It wasn’t that long ago that people were calling him the best prospect since McDavid.

Kakko, on the other hand, I think has to be in any Eichel trade. A new guy for Buffalo to build around. Probably the future RW for Cozens.

I’d say Kakko, Lundkvist, Buchnevich and a 1st is close.

Agreed. If I were Buffalo that’s the kind of package I’d be demanding for sure.

That’s not far off on value, but there’s not nearly enough cap going out from the Rangers. Need to add Strome and possibly others to make the money work. And I’d personally drop one of Chytl or Kravtsov in that scenario and add in a lower level guys, say Henriksson.

You need to create 10 million in cap space. Strome or Buchnevich, and DeAngelo or Smith (+ prospects and picks) would have to be part of the deal.
Mika has a full NTC, Smith may not modify to Buff..... I think the Rangers get this done in the off-season with 20 million free cap space.

Oh yeah I definitely understand that point. Ideally Strome is in the package or traded to another team for draft picks. I don’t think there’s much pressure though because....

- DeAngelo can be bought out pretty cheaply this off-season (only a 383,000 penalty against cap)

- Their other previous buyout penalties will go down next season which gives them more cap space.

- They’ll also gain cap space from Smith’s expiring contract (4.35 mil)

Just depends what other teams get in on the bidding & what they offer
