How id handle the situation

Created by: KingsLover
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 2, 2021
Published: Mar. 2, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Krueger needs to go which is sad cuz I really wanted to see him as a head coach again and it just isn't working.
I wouldn't trade Eichel unless he actually requested. You don't just trade talents like Jack Eichel unless u have to. They also need to give Reinhart an actual long term contract probably 6x6.5mil, he is a really solid top 6 forward.
Sign Ullamark to a 4 year 22mil deal, he is a good starting caliber goaltender. He definitely plays hard when he's in the net.
Putting Skinner with Eichel and Reinhart will help his numbers.
Cozens needs the opportunities to shine as he's primarily playing defensive minutes with goddam Cody Eakin. Playing with Olofsson and Domi, two players with faults in their game but are very talented players could potentially create a nice offensive line that is all signed into next season.

In the expansion draft , I see the team doing a 7-3-1 and protecting:
F:
Eichel, Skinner (NMC), Domi, Olofsson, Reinhart, Lazar, and Grimaldi
D;
Dahlin, Jokiharju, and probably Risto.
G;
Ullmark

I think SEA, with the options that are left, would pick Dean Kukan because he's a cheap depth d-man.

With 28 mil in the offseason (2.5mil savings with Miller Buyout) the Sabres:
resign Reinhart to 6.5milx6
resign Ullmark to 4.5x4
resign Dahlin to 3.75x2
resign Jokiharju 2x2
With those FA's for Buffalo resigned the team would still have about 12mil to work with to fill out other parts of the roster. If they can bring in a nice 3rd line centre and some solid defensive depth and a decent backup the team could look alright in 2022.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Grimaldi, Rocco
Additional Details:
Buffalo gets a cheap top 9 option in Grimaldi who gets sold while his value is low, he had a really nice 2020 season with 10 goals and 31 points. If he can get back on track in Buffalo that could help both parties.
NSH
  1. Thompson, Tage
  2. 2021 6th round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
NSH gets the younger player in Thompson who has just struggled in Buffalo and doesn't look that great overall. He has potential as a middle six forward so Nashville takes a chance for a guy in Grimaldi has not played anywhere near the level he did last year.
2.
BUF
  1. Gardiner, Jake
  2. Paquette, Cédric
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (CAR)
  4. 2022 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
For Buffalo they acquire some assets in picks and take on a Jake Gardiner who just hasn't worked in Carolina. This year he is better than last year but he seems to play better when he's used more, but with Carolina's depth at LHD; Slavin, Skjei, Bean, and Fleury. If he has a role more like he did in Toronto (2nd pair) maybe he performs better for Buffalo.
CAR
  1. Montour, Brandon ($750,000 retained)
  2. Staal, Eric
Additional Details:
The Canes pick up a familiar face to the franchise in what could be the end of his career to get his and the Canes 2nd Stanley Cup in 2021. Eric could play 3rd line centre, and the Jordan can play 4th line/defensive centre minutes as even though he's had a good year, he's in an offensive slump, and may go back to his normal 30 point pace.
Montour and Gardiner are essentially both similar defensemen but Carolina is lacking in RHD depth and Montour can take the spot as the number 6/scratch
3.
BUF
  1. Jankowski, Mark
  2. 2021 7th round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
7th for Reider is fair pretty much a fast player who's good on the PK. Also if Jankowski plays well maybe they resign him.
PIT
  1. Rieder, Tobias
Additional Details:
Penguins get a good PK killer in Rieder who's helped Buffalo's PK to an average mark, and maybe he can help fix Pitt's awful PK.
4.
BUF
  1. Domi, Max
  2. Kukan, Dean
  3. 2021 1st round pick (CBJ)
  4. 2023 3rd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
*3rd only transfers if Blue Jackets make playoffs in 2021 or Hall resigns
Domi has struggled in Columbus, but he has the talent to be a productive top 6 forward. In Buffalo there will be less pressure to be a main scorer for the team, and have opportunities to score being put with Cozens (who needs more opportunities) and Olofsson (who struggles to score even strength).
CBJ
  1. Hall, Taylor
Additional Details:
The Blue Jackets get Hall who has just looked out of place in Buffalo, and needs a new team to me. I know he's said he'd like to be in Buffalo but I think that if Buffalo doesn't come to an extension by the trade deadline then they'll want to ship him off for assets.
The Jackets need more star power and scoring and if Hall regains his form being a ppg player this could be a steal for Columbus, especially because the Domi experiment just hasn't worked out. With the cap space the Blue Jackets have next offseason they can afford to bring back Taylor Hall.
5.
BUF
  1. Chiasson, Alex
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. McCabe, Jake ($1,000,000 retained)

Columbus declines pretty easily imo. They don’t really have a need for another wing. They need a top 6 center more than a Hall especially if we are moving a 1st for a rental.

Not commenting on the trades, but I agree with what you said above. The one sticking point that I have is with the Dahlin contract-I'd be quite surprised to see him not get close to the Sergachev extension.

I want nothing to do with Jake Gardiner; he's a baby soft dman who is only useful when he's actually producing points.

Don’t mind E Staal and Montour for Gardiner and mish-mash of picks, but I don’t think the Canes deal Paquette as they made it a point to go and get that exact player. They want him for the playoffs. Maybe a Geekie and drop a pick, along with Gardiner and call it good.

Can we stop with the stupid cbj first for hall? We are looking like a lotto team for christs sake, we arent trading firsts that desperately need for anything less than a top 6 center with term

I get that but I think Columbus as a team can be better if they were to acquire another great scorer like Hall, I think Roslovic (even tho he sucks at Faceoffs) and Texier are decent centres and they can address the issue in the summer. Plus with the money they have to work with they can resign Hall at a decent cap hit.

Yeah I think he should get less but I went with what I thought a bridge deal for a player like Dahlin with the potential he has can get.

Very true, I just struggled to find salary to send back to Buffalo to make the deal work. Maybe Geekie and no 3rd would work for Buffalo.

Yeah I get that, but with the way the season is going for Nashville and Grimaldi I think maybe a change can help both Nashville and Thompson.

I'd guess that the McAvoy/Serg bridge deals would be the ask, and that it'd come in slightly lower...I also think I'd be aiming to get a decent long term extension done if I was Buffalo though.

Yeah he isn't a physical d-man, but he is a great puck mover who could definitely help out Buffalo offensively 5 on 5, and increase their puck possession which could increase scoring opportunities.

Hall is a useless add for Columbus and no where near moving a 1st for. They already have 4 top 6 wings with Laine, Bjorkstrand, Atkinson and Nyquist. They also have other wing middle 6 wings in Grigorenko, Domi, Folingo, Stenlund, Jenner and Robinson. I personally thing Texier and Roslovic will be good middle 6 centers but neither are top like centers. That’s what Columbus needs, not another wing, all of Columbus centers struggle with faceoffs, last time I looked the only player on the team over 50% was Jenner at 54%.
