It Should Be Lafreniere for Eichel

Created by: krakowitz
Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 1, 2021
Published: Mar. 2, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't understand why Rangers fans don't want to give Lafreniere for Eichel. I get he's oozing with potential, but you already have a surplus of high end wingers. Panarin, Kakko, Kreider, Buchnevich and Kravstov is an incredible group of wingers, and they don't have a legit 1C to play with. Lafreniere is expendable to get the last piece this team needs to have a long Cup window. A Panarin-Eichel-Kakko line has potential to be the best line in the league for as long as they stay together. It sucks to trade away the guy you just took 1st overall, but this is an opportunity that the Rangers shouldn't pass on if he becomes available.

Don't pay too much attention to the rest of the trade, I just quickly threw something together in my head. The key is that it's Lafreniere going as the main piece.

I think they'd ask for a guy like Lundkvist in the package as well.

The problem I see is how much of an improvement in the long run is it? Taking on Eichel also means his $10M cap hit which is gonna make it hard to re-sign guys like Zibanejad, Shestyorkin, Fox, Kakko, Chytil, Miller, etc.

I get that you've re-signed them here but there's no guarantee they sign for that amount. Losing Zibanejad to UFA puts them tight back where they're at now and in dire need of a good 2C. You'd be banking on Chytil to take that jump which I'm not so sure he will. Pretty risky

Close to taking it but don't see why the Sabres throw in Matej. I think he will be a useful 3-4th liner in the near future. I agree with @villenash that Lundkvist is added, 4 solid pieces

I think Chytil will be a fine 2C, but for the sake of things let's say he doesn't quite pan out in that role. Would you rather have to find a good 2C or a legit 1C? Pretty easy choice for me.

Based on what this quick projection was, there's still $9M in cap space to use if guys like Lindgren and Shesty get longer and larger contracts. Whatever is left over they'll have to spend on their other expiring RFAs plus Zibanejad's money and some of the buyout money that comes off. It's not an ideal cap situation, but I'd rather not have enough cap space to give a long term deal to a winger than give out those contracts and have no cap space to get a true 1C.

That's some serious chel trade vibes. If Buffalo is trading their franchise cornerstone, they need someone who can be that cornerstone coming back, especially since the Rangers literally have an expendable one.

Almost none of the time does that happen they'll get pieces bad that they'll be excited about but its never franchise player for franchise player unless both players are disgruntled. Also if you wanna make the case it would be for kakko not laf.
