Trade Deadline

Created by: PhillyDip123
Initial Creation Date: Mar 4, 2021
Published: Mar 4 at 10:50
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Team Explanation
Straight rental for a top line player on the Kings. Based the valuation on:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/rental-player-cost-nhl-trade-deadline/

Perhaps a 2nd + a prospect (like Abramov or SDA)? Seems like the Kings are our new primary trading partners instead of the Ducks.

If no ground is made with Iafallo by the trade deadline, ok, but he likely stays a King and moves down the lineup with Kopitar as the young centers come in.

Article from 2017 doesn't seem super relevant at this point...

On the flip side though, LA is 2 pts out of a playoff spot, with a very young team. They'd probably have to fall pretty far to go into sell-mode.

Was only considering as a rental, the leafs don't have space to sign him after this year - I thought LA might be interested because he's going to be a UFA, any team would be able to offer him a contract (including LA) after this season, and I didn't think LA was finished their rebuild yet.

Regarding their rebuild, I'd say they're closer to being done than we previously thought. They may not make the playoffs, but they've built up a pretty impressive group of prospects, and have the space to add where needed this summer.

I think the value to the Kings is more than fair here for Iafallo, but I’m hearing the Kings have no appetite to trade him and are expected to resign him and protect him in the expansion draft. Besides, it sends a bad signal to the veterans who are clawing to get that 4th playoff spot. I just don’t see this working.
