Description
RMNB writer had the idiotic thought that Washington should pay Ovechkin close to McDavid money. Last 3 seasons Ovechkin is #19 in points but #1 in goals. Great example would be Malkin is a UFA the year after Ovechkin. One could argue that Malkin has been the better player the last 3 season. Does Pittsburgh even consider paying him 10million +? doubtful. im not in favor of paying a premium for a diminishing product. that money can be spent elsewhere to help the Capitals be a contender. if not they risk becoming a lottery team bc Ovechkin doesnt possess the abiltiy to carry a team all by himself.

What I'd do is give that money to Ovechkin, but with only one year term. He'd need to show he's worth such money.

Calgary should look elsewhere for a 2C imo. Nuge for example. Monahan - Kuzy would be too lazy / defensively inept to really shine

Some good moves. Next, after the expansion draft, sign Ovechkin at 1x8M. Can replace Sheary or Virtanen. Either way. Unless you think they're better than him? In which case I'd love to hear why, but not really. e.t.a. The next year, they could sign Ovechkin at 1x8M again if he wants, and so forth. The over 36 penalties are serious.

He can test the market and see if that is out there. That frees up an expansion protection slot for WSH. If Ovechkin gets 12Mx5, I'm sure whatever team signs him will be happy with what they get, and Caps fans will wish them the best.

Maybe. But if they each get another 80 point season next year, who cares?

RNH only gets 80 points on the WING of McDavid lol....hes basically a winger now. Kuzy "lazy defense" but his CF% FF% and xGF% are better than RNH while also playing in way better division

    Naturally. He's a 36 year old.

Also, I think SLE has many better options than Hagelin+2nd to take from WSH.

very possible but my point is that we can dump Hags for a price. It all depends how the management in SLE values him. if we are lucky the will take Jensen or Schultz.... maybe Dillon

What are RNH numbers in the playoffs? last i checked Oilers lost to the the Hawks.... Kuzy is a better center than RNH and he's going to cost way less at the end of the day

...and Van only has two D they need to protect, so they get more value out of having Siegenthaler this summer than WSH would, whereas each team has a bunch of decent forwards. Great idea.

I think this is going to depend on what Ovi wants. Does he want money, or does he want a chance to win another Cup? $12.5M for him would cost immense roster shakeup, and wouldn't necessarily be better. You're basically taking out either a key defensive player, or another key forward to pay for his salary increase.

I like the idea of giving him year to year contracts, but I know he and Backstrom floated the idea of Backstrom signing a 5 year extension (which he did), and Ovechkin signing a 4 year extension so they can retire at the same time. A four year deal with a cap hit of $9.5 to 10.5 is doable. 12.5 really isn't.

Ted's a nice guy. I remember when he was paying Bondra, like, 5M, and Bondra left as a free agent, and made $1M the next year. I don't think you can reasonably expect Ovechkin to play like $9M for the next four years, but he's a marketable star and loyalty to a team's best player ever is certainly a good look. It means Vrana gets another bridge deal, and even then, under a flat cap Vrana's raise has to come from shipping someone out.

Here's my concern on the Ovi negotiations.
Backy signed for 5 years and got a nice raise. He got this nice raise because he was very, very underpaid at 6.7 for the length of that long deal.
Ovi situation is different. He has been one of the highest paid players these 13 years. He should not get any where near the bump Backy got because their situations are completely different. If Ovi is expecting this same type of scenario, he is mistaken.
