Third Line Magic

Created by: MapleLeafs4ever34
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 4, 2021
Published: Mar. 4, 2021

Description
It's time to stop automatically putting Engvall in every deal. This line is magic, and Engvall is a bargain for a 3C. He's playing so much better at center.

I think they've been the best line on the team since they've been put together.

I'm not sold on Engvall as a steady productive 3rd liner. But he shouldn't be traded as he is bargain. We have seen so many trades where the Leafs trade Engvall or Kerfoot for less productive players or vastly overpaid players for their production. Right now, can't see the Leafs making any desperate moves.

Engvall really does not have to be productive for the line to work, that line kept Mcdavid and Draisaitl at bay and honestly could become something similar to the Goodrow-Gourde-Coleman line where its a mix of everything. The HEM or ZIP line as its called has been pretty nice so far and stats back it. I wouldnt change a thing, even when simmonds comes back we can manage.

If you mean production offensively, well.. let's just say that if he focused on defensively being in good areas of the ice most of the time, I'll take that over scoring goals.

What I'm more interested in hearing from all of you is when the Leafs have a healthy roster, what decisions get made.

Everyone being healthy means there will be cap issues which is also why I personally don't understand why there's rumors/speculation about Dubas acquiring a bottom six forward.

Anyone care to explain why the Leafs need a another bottom six player when they will be making tough decisions like whether to dress Simmonds or keep Engvall in the lineup.

And as much as I may want both Simmonds and Engvall in the lineup, sad part is someone like Vesey may get chosen to play just because he's the cheaper option that allows the Leafs to be cap compliant.

Why can't Simmonds and Engvall can be in the same lineup? They were before Simmonds went down. Look at the above lineup. Take Vesey out and will have over $2M cap room to add Simmond's $1.5M.

Because you are running a 21 player roster up there. If you were to add Simmonds as a healthy scratch, Leafs would be over the cap.

Remember early in the season? Engvall was on the taxi squad when Simmonds was playing. The math doesn't work as much as I would like it to.

Also if Keefe decides to play Lehtonen instead of Dermott, more cap gymnastics are needed.

I would not want a 21 player roster in case of injuries.

Why would Simmonds be a healthy scratch? You'd send Petan or Vesey to the taxi-squad. Also, there's no reason to think we'll have three goalies on the active roster either. Send down Vesey and Hutch and that alone makes up Simmond's $1.5M and we still have over $1.2M in case of an injury. Multiple injures might throw a monkey-wrench into things, but other than that bringing Simmonds back shouldn't be a problem with Engvall.
