Salvage Value Hall Staal Montour Risto Trades

Created by: Survivorking77
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2021
Published: Mar. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this season is a write off for Buffalo and they need to salvage some value here.

I've seen some rumuors of Hall wanting to resign, but the same was said last year about Arizona. I have a hard time believing he will resign so I think it is in Buffalo's best interest to trade him and the others to salvage value from them before they hit UFA.

Trade reasonings are in the additional details below.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Bowers, Shane
  2. Saad, Brandon
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (COL)
COL
  1. Hall, Taylor ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I think this a good deal for both sides. Neither Hall or Saad have performed admirably in new destinations. This gives Colorado an upgrade for a run, while matching salaries and gives Buffalo a chance to audition Saad for the remainder of the year while also bringing in a former 1st round pick and a 3rd.
2.
BUF
  1. McKeown, Roland
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (CAR)
CAR
  1. Staal, Eric
Additional Details:
I don't think Staal has too much value these days. I think they would be lucky to get a 3rd but a return to Carolina makes sense and maybe they would be willing to pay a lil extra to bring the former captain back. McKeown never had a chance in Carolina and now Buffalo gets another player they can use on a trial basis for remainder of the season
3.
BUF
  1. Senyshyn, Zach
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (BOS)
BOS
  1. Montour, Brandon
Additional Details:
Boston is one of the few teams with cap space available. Montour gives them some valuable defense depth while Buffalo salvages a 3rd for a guy they paid a 1st for but has struggled since and they take a flier on a prospect who hasn't fully panned out yet.
4.
BUF
  1. Niku, Sami
  2. Perreault, Mathieu
  3. Vesalainen, Kristian
  4. 2021 1st round pick (WPG)
  5. 2023 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
3rd Rounder becomes a 2nd Rounder if Winnipeg resigns Risto long term or if they win the cup in either of the next two seasons
WPG
  1. Eakin, Cody
  2. Ristolainen, Rasmus
Additional Details:
Winnipeg is hungry for defense, these teams have connected before on big trades, why not another? I don't see a Risto trade happening mid season but for this exercise I wanted to entertain it.

Similiar to LA's Muzzin/Martinez trades where they had an extra year on their deals, RIsto would in this scenerio. Retained salary to match the salaries being exchanged and Buffalo gets a 1st, a former 1st rounder, another dman they can audition and a veteran player to mentor. Winnipeg brings back Eakin and gets their top paring dman.

sure Muzzin got that much of a return but he was also a better player who had been playing well consistently for years and was a cup champ (on a cheaper cap hit as well)

Unless you break montour’s right arm and force him to learn how to shoot left, i don’t see how that deal works.

That’s an awful deal for the avs, what are you talking about. Saad has been great for the avs

This is a fair deal for both the Jets a and sabres. Take away the conditions on the 3 round pick and deal

Even accepting your premise that Hall and Saad have been equally disappointing (which I don't), wouldn't it be human nature for Joe Sakic to stand pat and hope that the two players were roughly equivalent over the rest of the season? Why pay a third and a good prospect for the privilege of publicly admitting a mistake?

I think Saad has put up what should be expected (as of now 10 P in 19 GP) but most of that came in one hot streak. Checked today, Saad has been pointless in his last 6 games. I think given the chance, why not upgrade for Hall? In a winning environment surrounded by MacKinnon/Rantanen I think Hall would flourish and be a clear upgrade over Saad. I wouldn't call it "admitting a mistake", he'd be taking an asset in Saad and upgrading it.

I wouldn't call Saad great. He's met expectations IMO (10 P in 19 GP as of now; 7 of those points came in a 4 game span). As I said in another reply, I think putting Hall in a winning environment like the Avs he would flourish and be a clear upgrade over Saad. Cause lets face it, the Sabres have a toxic losing culture which I think is hampering his season.

Giving up a pending UFA, a 3rd and a prospect is pretty reasonable IMO. It's not like Bowers is an A+ prospect, I'd put Newhook, Barron, Kaut and Timmins ahead of him for the Avs. Not saying Bowers is bad, but I think he is expendable.

If you think only looking at points is how to measure these players you clearly don’t know what Saad games is about

Maybe just maybe hall has a toxic Locker room presence as well. Why would avs trade a solid 2 way winger who plays great defense and has won cups knowing how to get deep into the playoffs for hall, who is a on dimensional winger and in the playoffs last year was invisible and easy to game plan against

Then you don’t know anything about Saad and what he brings, consistent production throughout his career, which he’s doing once again, and excellent defensive hockey

No from Winnipeg. The Jets have no need for Eakin and there is no reason to give up their first for Ristolainen.
