Team next year no Ufa assuming Holl protected Dermott taken

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2021
Published: Mar. 6, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I hate losing Dermott I think we've really failed to develop him well and see him having a quietly good top 4 career ahead of him. Somewhat like an Anton stralman. But it is the cost of doing business as it were

Well hope Spezza and jumbo Joe have another year in then and wish to stay on the cheap.

I think we should be trying to acquire two top 9 wingers but they'll have to be on the cheaper end. Jumbo can be one of them

It's time for Sandin and Liljegren to put up or shut up.

We need a starting goalie.

Assuming a starting goalie is 5-6 mil theylly 4-5 mil to sign 2 wingers and ideally one defenseman.

Gonna be tight

Lose Dermott rather than Holl because of Travis will need a pay upgrade and the contract might be trouble signing.

Hyman at Tyler Toffoli numbers, 4 yrs times 4.25.

Spezza can stay, Jumbo Joe, meh.

Lilypad is finished, trade him to another team for another prospect failure.

The summer will see a few goalies on the trade list, team's afraid of losing a goalie for nothing will take a less than fair market value trade to get something rather nothing.

I'm all for resigning Hyman but I fear he wants Wilson money and that gets really hard to do.

A 4 m goalie is not actually that common an amount.

In regards to signing a Ufa off the market (vs resigning your own) the only guy I can think of of late between 3.5-5 is Holtby.

Everyone else was a 1b type guy and signed 3.5ish (khurobin, Crawford, Talbot, etc), or signed for starter money which is 5+ (Lehner, markstrom, Varlamov).

So I'm not sure such a goalie really exists.

I'd be interested in trading for Kuemper in the offseason if the price was right.

I'm good with resigning Andy but I doubt he would be happy with what I'd want to pay him

Do you think Connor Timmons and cal Foote are finished too? Same draft...

He just has it held against him that he was able to come straight to the AHL so he's been around longer and it feels like he should be further along. He's only 21.

Look at the guys ahead of him.

Muzzon became an NHLer at 23
Brodie at 21
Rielly was 19
Holl was 27 (obviously rare)

But 21-23 is plenty normal for d to become NHL regulars...

Because he's a good defenseman on an EXCELLENT contract.

If he was on a 4 or 5 million dollar contract id shrug my shoulders. But on his contract he's very valuable to the leafs

I could see Dubas paying Seattle a draft pick or two for them to take someone who doesn’t impact the roster a whole lot.
I’m confident in Dubas, he’s a smart guy.

I think there will be some goalies around in trade and maybe not even at not 4m

Hyman is a wealthy guy, from a wealthy family, with businesses based in Toronto. He just might be a position to take a hometown discount, but it's all up to him.

Leafs are getting good value from UFAs Thornton, Vesey, Bogosian, Spezza, Boyd and Simmons. 5.6m for six players. Admitting the taxi squad affect the cap structure this year. Can the Leafs strike magic again and get value with their UFA signings.

Why not? Position of need. He's competent and a real bargain at 2m

So the question is can we replicate are depth signing success.

Boyd/Spezza/Thornton/Bogosian are outperforming their contracts.

Vesey is whatever and Simmonds I think is likely about appropriately paid.

If we can pull that off again it will be good.

In regards to Hyman taking a home town discount, he could if he wants but he's coming off an underpaid contract. I wouldn't if I were him. But who the hell knows.

He gave Tavares a $77M, no-movement contract. He's not infallible.

People outside of Toronto think he's garbage as leafs fans were trying to trade him here all summer.

99% of people in hockey do that.

When you have an opportunity to acquire elite talent in the prime of their career you strongly consider it and likely do it and make it work.

He was offered more from San Jose and likely elsewhere.

The worst move he ever made was the Kessel contract. Everyone complains about overpaying marner by a million but no one remembers to mention he retained 1.25m on Kessel for 6 years!! Dead cap for 6 years.

The Kessel trade that happened before Dubas was ever with the team?

If you want the worst thing Dubas has done, its the Kadri trade.

I would hope 99% of hockey people wouldn't bring in a horrible contract when you have three other, younger players, also in the forward spot, that will command hefty contracts.

Dubas and hunter were acting interim GM's when it happened. It was post firing Nonis and before hiring Lou.

Ignoring I think they got bad value, that retention has killed us.

We gave up 1.25 mil in cap for 6 years. Nobody talks about it.

Leaf fans might have tried to trade him, but people that actually watch games, know he was the Leafs third Dman last season. Often people go by "names" and the past and not the reality of the now.

It's not a horrible contract so much as the cost of a Ufa franchise player in his prime.

There was nothing stopping them from using signing him as an opportunity to trade one of their youth. They then created an asset from nothing.

Essentially any team with the space would have signed that contract.

I'm not arguing with you I'm explaining. But I also don't expect non leafs fans to know that. I wouldn't know that level of player for most organizations.

You can read stank into jetsman post mocking Holl. Or you can just read it as a legitimate question. I chose the latter

Kessel was playing awful for Toronto. He was was often the worse player on his line....JVR and Bozak. No he had to go. Didn't matter that he turned his career around in Pittsburg, it wasn't happening here.
Dubas never signed Kessel, but he traded him.

Terrible signing, that is already hurting the team.

Essentially no team should do that.
