Initial Creation Date: Mar. 4, 2021
Published: Mar. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The last couple games have shown that this team can compete for a playoff spot, but not much more and the focus has to be on next year. I’d say Hartman and Bonino are the likely candidates, Cole as well if the right deal came.

Dumba is the Wild card, it’ll take an overpay to pry him out mid season and I’d eye WPG and PHI for that. I also don’t hate the idea of getting Addison a look at the playoffs if they make it this year.

@Claesson4Norris

At this point I think a 3rd is almost generous. If he gets NHL time and shows he’s a player I’d consider a 2nd, this is the cost of poor asset management. Until then I think teams would be hesitant to put up much more than a 3rd.

yeah i think a third is about right, lias andersson got moved for a late second tho and logan brown was better than he was in the AHL. maybe throw in a 4th? kinda nit picking tho

Edit: yeah nvm i forgot how old logan brown is lol

Yeah, I never thought of that comp but it’s a good one. I know he played a better game last night but it’s really getting ridiculous that he hasn’t played in the NHL this year. Had he done, I think a 2nd would have been absolutely reasonable.

i think he has to get a chance this year. if he cant get into games at 3c over friggin artem anisimov with stepan out, the sens are going to completely kill any value he has left

From what I’ve seen and read, his game has flaws but with the right linemates and coaching he can be useful. MIN had success getting Greenway to fill in his gaps and I think we can do the same with Brown.

But their whole earn it shtick is trash. Norris is better than Brown but that doesn’t mean Brown isn’t NHL worthy.

yeah i think his biggest knocks are that hes not a very good skater (which i dont think he'll ever be) and his compete level. Has lots of talent, puck skill, great passer, but im not sure he can be more than a 3c with good linemates. Adds a bit of value because he can be pretty useful on the powerplay but idk, well have to see

When he was in the NHL last year he was generating chances at a really good rate, but his line was comically unlucky when it came to finishing chances. It was actually a LOT like what Drake Batherson went through early in the season where he was generating a ton of of expected goals, but his on ice shooting percentage was something insane like 1.5%. But while Drake was given the leeway to figure it out, Brown wasn't.

For what it's worth, among all forwards still in the Senators organization, Logan grades out as the best in terms Goal above replacement per 60 min.

Obviously nothing is a guarantee, but I'm sure enough that he will succeed somewhere else, that there's no way I would trade him that cheap. The Sens need to get a respectable return back.

Minnesota wild say no. He's struggling right now in OHL, or whatever level he's playing. he's also been benched

MN really can't afford to trade both (either of them really) Hartman and Bonino.

Brown is in the same boat and Mitts, hasn't shown anything in the NHL and is waiver fodder after this season. If you want to take a chance on them fine, just don't pay much of anything to get them.

Of all the rentals Cole would get the best return right now. Bonino (half retained) might get a 3rd based solely on his past Playoffs, until he remembers how to put some points up his value just isn't there.

Hunt, Bjugstad, and MarJo are pressbox/depth players on any good team so I don't think they'd get anything in return.

I’ll focus on Hartman here, he’s a great player but is he the 3C next year? I ask because that’s probably the only position that justifies paying him is arb award which will be in the range of 2.5 mil. He’s probably got enough value to being back a better than expected return and I doubt most teams he’d be traded to will give him a QO meaning we can circle back on him as a UFA if we want.

He's worth $2.5m/yr. Will MN QO him, I don't know? Is the the 3C next year, again I don't know? I'd rather have him as a possibility for SEA to either pick outright or be bribed to take instead of Greenway. Hartman + Soucy could look tempting depending on which players other teams expose. He makes the Wild team better. At the rate things are going he could be the Zucc/Kaprizov center before too long this year.

I think MN makes the Playoffs this year. I don't think they can win the Cup; and probably don't even win a series; but I think you need to give the team the best chance they can breaking the bank on buying at the TDL. I also think Greenway, Fiala, Kaprizov, and maybe Boldy (if he's ready) need as many Playoff games as possible in preparation for future years. Fiala got frustrated and it showed in the Play-ins last year. Greenway is a completely different player than last year. Kaprizov has had the KHL Playoffs, but it's not the same as the NHL Playoffs.

If it costs MN not getting a 2nd for Hartman ant the TDL and he ends up walking away after the season, I'm okay with that. If some team came along with a Hanzal type of offer for Hartman, I'd take it and run. He's like Foligno: worth more to the team than actual; trade value.

A fair question. I was thinking about whether CAR is in need of a forward for their playoff run. Hartman fits their MO of being fast and skilled, but he brings grit and versatility that are useful down the stretch.

Doubtful it’s what the need, but I think it’s fair value given Hartman is and RFA.

And I think you're over-valuing a bottom 6 grinder player (Carolina already has one too many of them).

That’s fair, I would say he’s worth a 2nd though. He’s similar to Coleman in that he’s got the grit you want but he’s also skilled enough to play with skilled guys. Also not sleeping on the cup pedigree and that he’s still and RFA.
