Something has to give

Created by: oilersfan19
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 7, 2021
Published: Mar. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Henriksson, Karl [Reserve List]
  2. Howden, Brett
  3. Lundkvist, Nils [Reserve List]
  4. Smith, Brendan
  5. Zibanejad, Mika
  6. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
  7. 2022 1st round pick (NYR)
  8. 2023 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
- Mika Zibanejad
One of the many disappointing players of the 2021 season, Mika has looked like a shell of his old 40 goal scoring self this season, even though he sees frequent top 6 minutes. In this trade, he stays within division and looks to rebound as one of the top scoring options in this weak BUF team.

- Brett Howden
Another one of NYR’s struggling forwards, Howden has only 2 assists in 22 games. This change of scenery would hopefully boost Howden’s offensive numbers.

- Brendan Smith
Essentially a cap dump. Not much else to add, helps the cap situation work for NYR

- Nils Lundkvist
Looking like one of the top SHL defencemen despite his young age, he seems like a hell of a steal for NYR. Like I said with the Eichel return being massive, a top, Swedish RHD to play beside Dahlin in the future is something BUF could look to do

- Karl Henriksson
Another middle 6 potential prospect to add in the BUF system.
NYR
  1. Eichel, Jack
Additional Details:
- Jack Eichel
Although Eichel has not requested a trade out of BUF, he needs to go. A player of his stature does not deserve to get shafted with such a poor team. He is a franchise, arguably top 5 center in the NHL so the value will be return will be quite massive.
2.
BUF
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Benson, Tyler
  3. Kassian, Zack
  4. 2021 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Tyson Barrie
Doesn’t need to play a single game in BUF. During his short quarantine into the states, BUF can facilitate a flip and send him to a playoff contender, selling high. Barrie in EDM has been nothing but great offensively. However, he’s taking time from Evan Bouchard. Bouch is a younger, more defensively skilled version of Barrie. As for Barrie’s absence on PP1, that can be filled by Puljuarvi, Neal, Nurse, etc.

- Zack Kassian
Unfortunatley once Kassian signed his long term 3.4 x 4 contract with EDM, he stopped producing. Kassian played up to level you’d expect anybody to play with McDavid. Now in the bottom 6, he’s good, but not for his contract. A team like BUF could take on his deal, a former draftee in Kassian could work his way up in the middle 6 potentially if they go ahead with the rebuild.

- Tyler Benson
An older prospect who’s being held back in the EDM system due to their lower end depth. He played like an NHL caliber player during his 7 game stint last year, and could find himself in games this year.
EDM
  1. Hall, Taylor ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
- Taylor Hall
Hall to BUF seems like a fail at this point, and a deadline flip to get value out of him seems like a no brainer at this point. Trading him to his former team in EDM, with old friends, and a city he’s familiar with, even if it’s for 1 year seems like a slam dunk option. EDM not only has value to give up, but will play Hall to the best of his ability, and heading to the offseason, they can look at signing either one of RNH and Hall, or even both depending on if they’re willing to take discounts.
3.
BUF
  1. Andersson, Lias
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
- Lias Andersson
Another player not fitting in his new team, Andersson had all the chance in the world to make the LAK lineup with weak depth, but failed to keep a roster spot. He can get a last chance type of dealing to BUF as he’d likely have a spot in their lineup.
LAK
  1. Barrie, Tyson
Additional Details:
- Tyson Barrie
As LAK is challenging for a playoff spot, dealing with defensive injuries, trading for Barrie would be a good option for them. He would improve their power play and offence in 5on5.
4.
BUF
  1. Staal, Marc
Additional Details:
- Marc Staal
Traded here to team up with his brother Eric, and a cap dump.
DET
  1. Andersson, Lias
  2. Skinner, Jeff
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (BUF)
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
- Jeff Skinner
Skinner needs a change of scenery badly and DET out of all teams could not only take his salary (with extra value slapped on top) and give him some retribution minutes in the top 6. Especially if DET looks to get value out of Bobby Ryan, leaving a hole in the top 6

- Lias Andersson
Carrying over what I said in previous trade description, he needs a change of scenery, DET has a history with Swedes, and could make their lineup
5.
BUF
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Gardiner, Jake
  3. Puistola, Patrik [Reserve List]
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (CAR)
  5. 2021 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
- Jake Gardiner
With Gardiner and his long term deal coming out, and Marc Staal and his short term deal coming in. This gives opportunity for Bean & Fleury to rise up into the Top 4 on the left side, leaving Marc Staal as the 6th/7th man. Gardiner’s deal seemed poor from the start, and evidentially turned out to be so.

- Warren Foegele
A semi-breakout star of last season, Foegele earned his spot in the middle 6 with his good play. Foegele coming out is replaced by Canes legend Eric Staal in the process.

- Patrik Puistola
Puistola had a noticeably rough season in the LIIGA, most notably being left off the Finnish world juniors camp & roster itself. With this poor play, and still obvious potential, makes him a easy trade candidate for CAR
CAR
  1. Staal, Eric
  2. Staal, Marc ($2,850,000 retained)
Additional Details:
- Eric Staal
As Carolina is coming together and seems to be a top team in the Central, Eric Staal joins the already stacked team on a hopefully deep playoff run. Carolina went deep last year and wants to capitalize on their success. Bringing back Canes legend in Eric without 100% capacity seems sad for Canes fans, but he’ll be a treat for them in the playoffs

- Marc Staal
Marc Staal’s veteran presence plus the fact he’s playing with 2 of his brothers will add a lot to this Carolina team. He’ll give chances to guys like Bean & Fleury to move up the lineup, as at his age shouldn’t be playing top 4 minutes.
6.
BUF
  1. Dubinsky, Brandon
  2. 2021 4th round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
- Brandon Dubinsky
LTIR’d contract for the entirety of this season, and likely his career. Just a contract to back the other way
CBJ
  1. Montour, Brandon
Additional Details:
- Brandon Montour
After CBJ’s poor play, they may choose to pick up assets at the deadline. Losing Nuutivara & Murray during the off season may have been detrimental as their defence seems noticeably weak. Picking up Montour who can go on both the left or right side, would be a great pickup
7.
BUF
  1. 2022 5th round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Miller, Colin
Additional Details:
- Colin Miller
Dallas has been struggling all season not only to win games but not get them cancelled. Even though their lack of games played may be a reason, they’re a bottom 5 team. Getting some extra defensive help in Miller for cheap could help this former Stanley Cup finalist get back into the playoff hunt, in a very competitive central division.
8.
BUF
  1. Bennett, Sam
  2. Kylington, Oliver
Additional Details:
- Sam Bennett
Recently requesting a trade from CGY, he could very well find his way out on. Former 4th overall pick may have lost some of that pedigree, but that pedigree in general is cause to a lot of frustration on how Bennett has turned out. He can be offered a change of scenery to work his way up the lineup in BUF

- Oliver Kylington
Kylington who recently was waived, and passed through waivers has faltered through his career. At one point challenging McDavid for 1st overall in 2015, to falling to the second round, now struggling to make the lineup 6 years later. He could use a change of scenery, like many others on this armchair GM.
CGY
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
  2. Pilut, Lawrence [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
- Casey Mittlestadt
It’s painfully obvious Mittlestadt needs a change of scenery in BUF. After being rushed into the NHL after a stellar season in the NCAA, it was proved easily he wasn’t quite ready. He still has elite potential but needs a team to showcase it with. In calgary, all their lines seem interchangeable, so he could easily earn his way up in the middle or maybe top 6

- Lawrence Pilut
A now KHL defender, Pilut was the Sabres 7th defender during the 19/20 season. In a few years time once his KHL deal is up, and Calgary has room in their defence, he could rejoin the NHL in a solidified Top 6 role.

I don't have to tell you Detroit isnt taking him for a couple picks and a prospect whos a head case. Its 9 million a season for god sakes.

He loved Edmonton and was great next to McDavid. EDM is still having offensive issues, I think he'd be great in EDM. I don't think EDM wants to move Barrie for him though. Zibanejad isn't waiving his NMC to go to Buffalo though, that's for sure.

I really doubt Yzerman would ever consider trading for Andersson.

He loved Edmonton, it’s not his fault we traded him. he also said before he’d be open to being an Oiler again before to media. We’re also in a playoff spot right now so don’t know what this guys goin on about.

Also contrary to popular belief he was decent with McDavid, but was part of an evolving dynamic duo with Draisaitl. His compliment to a player with speed and skill was part of the reason Drai’s so good with McDavid. That was rookie Drai that got 50 point centering him, imagine Hart trophy Drai now with Hall on his wing

Nice description on how the Wings can help Skinner, but the answer is NO. He makes 9 million over what the next 6 years and just w bored his 1st goal this season today.

There is zero reason to take on the contract without at least 2 1st's ot a 1st and a couple of a prospects.

Please understand just beautiful use Wings are in rebuild and have a lot of cap spa e they ARE NOT going to piss away on bad contracts for multiple years without getting something in return

The explanations are deep but,
1. Trading Eichel is gonna need a lot more than a much of maybe's, no matter how many there are. Only Lundqvist comes close to being considered an A level prospect and I think that they need a little more quality, even if sacrificing quanitity.
2. I do not believe that the Oilers will trade away Tyson Barrie, he might be a non-factor on defense but his offensive play is what they need going into the playoffs. I think Edmonton would much rather part with futures if trading hall, and its kind of ridiculous that Hall is getting traded for more in this hypothetical than he did when sent to Arizona considering his value was much higher then.
3. Those seconds would have to be firsts to take on the skinner contract. I personally think that Buffalo needs to do everything in there power to give him a better opportunity to succeed, the talent has to still be there. He scored 40 goal season came when 40% of his offensive ice time came with Eichel and Reinhart. Last season, that group accounted for 10% of Skinner's ice time. His most common linemates last year were Vladimir Sobotka and Marcus Johansson. It's clear Ralph Krueger just doesnt know what he has. The Sabres gave Skinner 9 mil for 8 seasons and then hired a coach who removed him from the line that allowed him to actually do that.
4. That deal involving the Staal's is awful. The Carolina hurricanes are trying to win a cup. They are not trying to win the hearts of their fanbase, the storm surge already did that. Bringing in the Staals to have all 3 on the roster as some sort of publicity stunt is not the type of decision I expect from a team that has the core to win like they do. I get acquiring Eric, but Marc is so much worse than Gardiner. Considering you are downgrading on D, Eric Staal is not worth a 2nd, 3rd, Foegle, a prospect, and a defensive downgrade.
5. Montour is worth more than a 4th. A pick in the early 3rd-late 2nd range is more like him considering its only been 2 years since he was traded for a first and prospect
6. Colin Miller is worth more than a 5th. A mid 3rd is proper value considering its only been 2 years since he was traded for a 2nd and a 5th

Kings decline. They can just wait and sign Barrie to a contract after the season is over if they want him. They are not going to trade a 2nd and Andersson for that.

Barrie is outscoring Hall and is less than half the cost. Why is Edmonton adding assets?

That canes trade is a whole lot to give up for a rental bottom-6 center and a healthy scratch d-man.
