Description

There is a very good chance that with his cap hit at 6 million and now that he is in his prime, Minnesota might have to do something about Matt Dumba before it's too late.

Minnesota has a good team but with the expansion draft on the horizon, you can only protect so many good players.

In this post, I picked the LA Kings as the team to trade Dumba before the deadline.

The LA Kings have a ton of blue clip prospects, they have the cap space to take on Dumba and Minnesota won't be in LA's division after this season.

Also, if Drew Doughty goes down, the Kings can replace Doughty with Dumba on the top pair until Doughty comes back.

Right now according to moneypuck.com, the odds that the Kings make the playoffs is at 30%, but by adding Dumba, it will go over 50% at some point this season.

Easy.

I modelled this trade on the EK65 trade with San Jose.

Dumba produces about the same as what EK65 does today but plays a much more physically and defensively minded type of game.

He is also paid slightly less than when EK65 was with Ottawa and he is still under contract for another 2 seasons after this one.

Unlike EK65, who was traded to San Jose with just one year left on his deal.

I know I'm going to be torn to shreds by fans on both sides, but that's part of the business of being an ACGM and as a GM in real life ;)

The only piece that I touched from LA's core group is Jeff Carter.

He's over the age of 35 and is way overpaid.

LA won't be protecting him from expansion, so everything that the Kings are giving to the Wild is expendable.

I'm not a fan of EK by any means, even less so now that he's in San Jose. But I can't imagine trying to compare nearly prime EK when he was traded to what Dumba is now, at least not with a straight face. That's terrible.

Difference between EK65 when he was traded and Matt Dumba today is this:

EK65 was a pending UFA while Dumba has 2 full years after this.

You probably thought the Sharks fleeced the Sens at the time.

Dumba doesn't have a choice in the matter.

It comes down to him either getting traded before the deadline or Seattle selects him in expansion on their own terms.

That being said, Ottawa sold EK at the time when he was THE PREMIER offensive defenseman in the game. Dumba has absolutely nothing in his past to cause value anything like what you're proposing.

Don't get me wrong, Dumba's a good defenseman. I think he's worth a first round pick along with a prospect. But you're not getting one of the Kings premier prospects and three picks all in the top 2 rounds, IN ADDITION to more prospects. Finally, the cap isn't a problem for the Kings, and won't be even up until Carter's contract ends. So adding him into the deal as a "favor" of sorts to get more value from the trade isn't realistic. It's not like LA is cap-strapped like Toronto, needing to find any dollar of cap space.

This is waaaaaayy too much for Matt Dumba. A 2nd and Kaliyev would be fair value, and as a Kings fan, I don't know that I'd want them to even do that.
