Garland deal TDL1

Created by: TheOtherAuston
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2021
Published: Mar. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Alright so the thinking behind the deals are as follows.

Glendening is great in the dot this year with 67% (likely to come back to earth) and can be had on the cheap.

Foligno, while not a huge improvement on FO% over other options he is still at a 45% rate but the way that line would function it really doesn't matter if they lose a couple more than they win. He also adds more veteran leadership.

Garland, I feel like it's a good offer for him. The coyotes will have to give him a raise next season which we all know they don't want to spend, they also get a first that they really need for this year and a top prospect.

More like Hallender and Toronto's 2021 3rd round pick it's going to be late anyways closer to a early 4th round pick.

I agree that is more fair but leafs don't have a 2021 3rd

How is Toronto going to afford Garland’s raise though?

I think by the time his following deal comes up the cap will have increased (minimally mind you) and I don't think the leafs resign Rielly or they move Nylander slide garland to the right and make room for amirov.

He’s an RFA after this season and will be due a substantial raise. The current escrow needs to be lowered in order to raise the cap ceiling and we’re looking around ~2 years based on predictions. So you’re willing to lose a good defensemen and your starting goalie in order to fit him in? Seems counter productive.

If we move Nylander for a good prospect and picks before the draft then we won't need to expose a dman and as much as I like Andersen I believe the way we can play defense now we can have a lower cost goalie do similar work.

Why wouldn't Arizona be willing to spend market value on one of their top 6 forwards? They have over $14 million in three over-33-year-old defensemen coming off the books next season plus Ranta's $4.25 million.

They probably could but from everything we've heard over the past year, they want to cut salary for the foreseeable future in the flat cap

Toronto is already close to the cap and from other deals (eg Toews, Schmidt) teams aren’t getting top dollar for their players if salary is going one way. How many teams would be able to afford Nylander next year?

You can get a cheaper starter than Freddy but how much cheaper are we talking realistically? Freddy is coming off a 5M contract, so are you saying target a mid tier guy for roughly 3.5M? The following year you have Reilly so how do plan for that also with no increase in salary or maybe a million? I also see you dumped Kerfoot which hurts your depth and would need to be addressed once Foligno is off the books.

It’s definitely an original idea, so kudos for that.

A 2022 3rd round pick should suffice then.
