Getting the Flames to the playoffs and beyond

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2020-21 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These two trades build off from the ideas that came from my previous posts on ACGM.

In the Devils trade, it's the same with one exception:

I give Edmonton's 3rd to the Predators instead of the Devils because Gusev has continued to be a healthy scratch for the Devils and Gusev is a pending UFA while Sam Bennett is not.

Knowing Gusev has been a healthy scratch with some regularity, the 3rd round pick going to the Devils is downgraded to a 5th.

In the Ekholm trade, I ensure that the Flames compete with other offers for a good quality defence man on a nice contract and who can play a ton of minutes, as shown from his past few games.

The Calgary Flames has more Swedish players on its roster than most teams, so any language barrier when it comes to making a game plan with Ekholm on the fly during game-time is overcome.

The Ekholm trade is based on the Jake Muzzin, Jacob Trouba and Brady Skjei trades.

It is also based on my post from yesterday about trading Dumba to the Kings for Durzi and a lottery protected 1st round pick, which is now in Capfriendly Heaven :)

Let me know your thoughts and I'll see you in the comments :D

Take out the condition and just make it a 2022. Preds would rather have 2022 over 2021

Biggest problem here is Seattle. I think it would be a huge mistake to leave Tanev exposed with what he has done with Hanifin this year, if Hanifin graduates to Gio's spot next year with Andersson you need Tanev to have the same impact on Valimaki next year, after that if his play declines like crazy, fine, what he will have done for that left side of the Flames D is future changing.

In your scenario above your protection list would likely be:
Tkachuk
Gaudreau
Lindholm
Monahan
Mangiapane
Dube
Backlund/Lucic (Lucic will waive)
Hanifin
Andersson
Ekholm
Markstrom

Leaving, Tanev, Giordano, Backlund/Lucic. With it likely being Lucic of those three a team would be crazy to pass on Tanev. Giordano should be the ideal pick.

What do you all think Bennett would want for his next contract?
I'd think NJD would lean towards Yes.

May I ask why the Preds would want to wait a whole extra year to use their 1st round pick?

Are you expecting the Flames to perform worse next year in comparison to this year? smile

No, just a much better draft class in 2022. 2021 is a real crap shoot.
