Ekholm to Montreal

Created by: frost_biten
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 11, 2021
Published: Mar. 11, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I feel like this is similar to the Jake Muzzin trade.

This should give Montreal the space to sign Danault to roughly a 4.5-5M contract, Kotkaniemi to a 3M bridge, Perry to a 1x1, and Caufield's ELC. Potentially signing Armia depending on what happens with Seattle.

I think that’s a more than fair package tbh. I think it would come down to if it’s the best package they are offered

If you take out Lehkonen and the retention on Ekholm it's a lot closer to the Muzzin return.

Sure, but there also isn't a clean way to make the money work.

Meant to reply to this comment. Without Lehkonen and the retition there isn't a good way to make the money work.

With Lehkonen and the retention though, it eats away at the value NSH is getting back. I think the Preds could find a better offer than this.

You can go over the cap by 4.2M for MTL. You don’t need to send salary

If Chiarot is out long term, all cap problems go away (mostly..)

Than I’d opt to keep Lehkonen and just stick to a picks + prospects package.
I’d also try and keep Struble, would rather move Harris, Fairbrother, etc. Although there are quite a few who are higher on Harris than Struble.

MTL is a team that makes a lot of sense to me because they are one of the teams that wouldnt risk losing a sick dman to Seattle with the acquisiton of Ekholm. Cap is definitely an issue, so that is what will vary from the Muzzin trade. Lehkonen seems like the logical guy going the other way. On CapFriendly, it states that MTL should have around $1.6M in cap space, so the straight swap of both could make it work. NSH could also take on Weal, which saves MTL $325k. I feel like Lehkonen, Harris and a 1st makes sense. I could see them going after the 2 prospects you mentioned, Norlinder or even Ylonen.
