I am laughing my head off now.

This guy’s temper has been a detriment to the team, and has regressed ever since winning a cup, now they’re giving him a long-term contract until he’s 34.

This is the same situation with Murray, except Binnington is older. (At least Ottawa gave Murray 2 fewer years though) Terrible signing by the Blues.

Keeping him in the net in the playoffs over Allen, then trading Allen for nearly nothing, and now he’s signed for over $3 million more per year than Allen on their extensions while Jake is playing better, is a series of bad decisions by the Blues.

Price is a bit steep, but it was only two years ago where he practically carried the Blues to the playoffs and Stanley Cup. I'd say he deserved the money after his really good first season.

This is a terrible contract, dude is clearly regressing and he is no where near 6 million dollar caliber goaltender. This one might not hurt that bad now but in a few years they gonna be struggling.

Markstroms contract should be the max for goalie extensions in this flat cap era.

But yeah I dont think its a great contract

Edit: Becoming another Jones like deal so far ouch

He did not carry the team by any means. Sure he was good, but nothing more than an average NHL starter in the playoffs.

Actually his temperament fires up the team. They even said he was a big reason why they won after the SJ meltdown.

That stated, still a horrible deal.

Not exactly great for someone who looks like they've been declining since their rookie season.

I'm betting not...it's a pretty terrible deal for a guy with a .908 save percentage.

You don't give out contracts based on what a player did 2 years ago, you base it on what you expect them to do for your team. The 2x$4.5M contract was the "he deserved the money" contract. The dude has been going steadily since. This is the equivalent of Eriksson's contract, but for a goalie.

Yeah, saying he carried the team may have been a bit of an exaggeration, but he was really good that season. All I'm saying is that although the contract isn't great, he still was really good that season and could maybe rebound. And I think this deal was as expensive as it was because he took a bridge deal a couple years ago if I remember correctly, and he was probably promised this amount of money.

But yeah if he doesn't rebound, yikes.

This could end up as a disaster, but to be fair I don't think STL had many other realistic options.

There are countless examples of capfriendly geniuses being dead wrong
Wilson contract, Skjei contract, Karlsson trade, Domi - Galch trade, Domi - Anderson trade, and many many more
At this point it is really hard to take capfriendly's opinion on these things seriously

In these times I would have expected 5.5x4 or something like that.

I understand that. Hell, I made a badly aged post on the Karlsson deal, but just looking at Binnington night in/out, he's not a 6mil goalie.

Could have gone after Mrazek in the off-season. Also have Joel Hofer coming up who's been the best prospect they've had since Bishop.

I did watch all of the games (other than maybe one or two in the 2nd round), and he was good, but he wasn’t any better than any of the other 3 cup winning goaltenders I’ve watched for the entire playoffs (Murray x2, Holtby, & Vaseilesky).

Blues didn’t resign Petro to give Faulk, Scandella and now Binnington all contracts till they’re 65

Canes are probably keeping the guy.

Hofer's interesting, but not yet NHL ready I reckon.

The goalie market next year is meh imo, which is why they probably just decided to ink Binnington long-term.

Not something I would've personally done though.

They weren't gonna get any better goaltender on the market for cheaper than this so it makes sense short term at least.
