Good deal for both imo. Both teams get something they need.

The way I'm rationalizing this trade is that Lehtonen wasn't going to break into the team long term and Dubas wants to keep his agent happy by selling him to a team who will play him. I think he's a lot better than a below 0.900 AHL goalie but a 27 year old defenseman with no prior NHL experience isn't a high sell and you take what you get. Marlies also need a goaltender since the Leafs ones keep falling apart.

Toronto still has Sandin and Marincin for the depth options.

Remember when Leaf fans were saying Lehtonen was a future top pairing defender?

I'd give the edge to Toronto because of the difference in age and team control.

Both players had great numbers in Europe and have struggled to get a footing in North America. Still struggling to see how this helps Toronto, all it means to Columbus is that Savard is going to be traded and Toronto wasn’t happy with how their goalie situation was.

For Toronto fans Vehvilainen has a 1.58 and a .933 in Finland 2 years ago. He just needs time before he’s in the NHL.

the way i see it, its one of:
a) Mikko asks out to get playing time, Leafs didn't see him as much more than Marincin
b) Mikko asks out, they identify a team with Goalie surplus, and someone who Leafs euro scouts liked
c) something bigger is brewing on the Goalie front, and needed another depth Goalie to insulate after they trade (or don't sign?) another

Vehvilainen has enormous potential. The monsters in general are an ok AHL team but not great. His numbers in Liga have been stellar and he reminds me of Lankinen. The marlies have a solid goaltending coach and Vehvilainen could bounce back and be a future starter in the works.

I don't know much the Vehvilainen. Lehtonen was sent down to the minors just before the trade and he hasn't been in the lineup much. I think the Leafs acquired a goalie now because the quarantine won't be very problematic now. They don't have many games in the next stretch and Andersen is healthy so Vehvilainen won't need to play. Dubas probably wanted to develop another goalie in the Leafs system, because the Leafs could potentially lose 2 or 3 goalies at the end of this season. Andersen could leave in Free Agency, and another goalie could get claimed by Seattle. Next year, Hutch and Campbell both become UFAs, and Woll is a RFA this year although under the CBA, he's ineligible for an Offer Sheet. I'd say this is a good deal by Toronto.

I would have preferred keeping Lehtonen playing over Bogosian.

I hope he truly gets a chance to show what he can do in Columbus.

plus future starter potentially in the works

Dubas now has 4 potential starters in the system

Will probs take over as the marlies starter. Will be watching him very closely

Potential starter? Besides his age, there's nothing good looking about him

People said the same thing about Markstrom, Binnington, and Lankinen and look where they are now. Goalies take time to develop and the marlies got a very good goaltending coach who has worked with goalies like Anti Raanta, Matt Murray, and Darcy Kuemper, and Mike Smith in his prime hes in good hands

Fair Deal, but not the best look for TOR. Lehtonen could have signed anywhere. The fact that things didn't work out isn't 100% on TOR. It's not 100% on Lehtonen either. It's a mixture, but for any Euro signing...it will be at least a factor to consider. Why not join a different organization with a proven track record or turning Euro's into proven NHLers.

Because we never tried to lul. Leafs were not run properly for years and never drafted the right goalies. James Reimer was developed in our system and worked out well. In general the Marlies were bad for a long time but thanks to Keefe and Dubas efforts that changed . Thanks to people like Kyle Dubas and Brendan Shanahan that all changed and through hiring's of proper goaltending coaches and development staff we have a new vision in mind on how to develop players properly.

Scott, Woll and now Vehvilainen are in good hands now as Jon Elkin has helped goaltenders like Kuemper, Raanta, Smith, and developed goalies like Murray.

Tell that to @Miles_Togo . He's convinced they suck at developing prospects.

I don't know what's funnier, the Mikko Lehtonen apparently didn't single handedly reconstruct the leafs defense comments, or the "leafs logic" about how and why this trade happened.
If you would have asked these same leafs fans about Vehvilainen a couple days ago, they would have said, "he's a struggling AHL goalie, he's not worth Lehtonen."
But now he has "enormous potential."

Trade of two guys, neither one of which is more than a replacement level backup.
