Contender Two Years

Created by: peezyfbaby
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2021
Published: Mar. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the team is committed to a two years to contention window, that makes JT Miller, Bo Horvat and Nate Schmidt expendable when they are still on friendly cap hits and can fetch a significant return. Theirs ages don't match up with the core. The goal would be to get firsts in the deep 2022 draft and D prospects that fit the Petey Hughes Demko Boeser core timeline. Dmen that come to mind are David Farrance, Nils Lundqvist, Jake Bean, Dante Fabbro and Victor Soderstrom as examples. Schmidt return could also fetch a prospect but to keep it conservative, I kept it to 1st and D prospect for Bo (extra 3rd for legit C) and JT and a 1st for Schmidt. The trade for Motte assumes we trade him 2021 at the deadline where he has two years at a team friendly cap hit where he can provide high end 4th line and PK. Hopefully you are top 3 in lotto 2021 and 2022 and select high end prospects to add to the team stable. 4 picks in 2022 is really nice. The team will have the cap space to gain additional picks for taking on cap space. The team will have locked up cornerstones in Petey, Hughes and Demko to long term deals providing certainty and structure to the org chart. Finally, its a cheap salary year while you let Beagle, Roussel, Erikkson and Luongo Recapture all come off the books. You spend on the right Free agents in summer of 2022 while locking up Boeser long term.

The 2022 draft is loaded....and those four 1st rounders in 2022 (EDM, NSH, NYR, VAN) could be top-10 picks.

I say do this over the 1-year plan.

so u give a 3rd for Schmidt but Edmonton will casually give u a 1st for him, and by the way, Schmidt hasn't really played that good this year

i mean that was a ridiculous steal. nate schmidt is a very good d man - what does a 3rd round pick turn into on average? nothing? that was extreme robbery of a team in a tight cap spot. i think that he is 100% worth a non-lottery first.

i really like this is general. i think 2 years is probably extremely optimistic. but this is a legit rebuilding plan... on paper it feels like van is close but clearly they are not. getting absolutely dummied by habs is primary evidence

Not a chance from the Rangers. We’re not contending yet, definitely not giving up 1sts when they are more than likely top 10 picks. Plus next year is loaded not a chance in hell I’d trade that pick. Plus Miller doesn’t fit the age of our core which is younger than your core. This trade is awful for us.

Thats fair, I just really like Nils Lundqvist and if it isnt the rangers, I would like for nucks to go after a trade with another team cut from the same framework, 1st and a Dman prospect for Miller and/or Horvat wiht their two years left at roughly 5 and a quarter per.

Look at the analytics, him and Edler have been one of the better pairs by xG for and against this year. Its all Schmidt. We stole him, teams were choked what we got him for. He is a 1st, bonafide top pair dman.

Rangers wouldn't give up either of those pieces by themselves for Miller.
