Ekholm

Created by: Shanesaw9
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2021
Published: Mar. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tried to base the value off of the Leafs trade for Muzzin, there are some extra parts like Byron and Haula that complicate things a bit, but I think the value works out.

Ekholm makes sense for MTL because he still has term left, Chiarot is hurt and they need a replacement, plus even with Chiarot healthy they needed another top 4 D. When Chiarot comes back he could play 3rd pair with Romanov ideally solidifying MTL's defence.

Haula would be an underrated pick up, he could really help Suzuki on faceoffs if they were on the same line. I would switch KK and Suzuki right now as Suzuki looks overwhelmed and exhausted, playing a lesser role could benefit him. KK seems like the type of player that just gets better with more icetime

a cap dump, a zero value defenseman, a no name prospect and a mid/late pick in a mediocre draft year.

You've paid to move Byron and get Haula.... where's the assets for Ekholm?

Struble and a 1st. Nashville would do that in a second. Jets are being talked about offering Niku and a 1st. Habs 1st will be a better pick and Struble is a much better prospect

Montreal shouldn't do that trade as they are not a contender.

Ekholm wont fetch as much as you think as Ekholm would need to be protected in Seattle expansion and there's the fact teams dont have money. Ekholm isnt getting Muzzin prices. The market has shifted

Paying a 2nd rounder to move Byron is also a mistake.

They have interest in Niku. Most Jets fans have been thinking it will be Vesalainen, Niku and 1st. Vesalainen adds considerable value to the move.

You say Ekholm isn't getting Muzzin pieces, but Ekholm is a better defenseman.

Sorry, are you suggesting the price to move Byron and get Haula is Struble, Kulak, a 1st, and 2nd? You sir, have lost all credibility with your comment.

I stated I was using the Muzzin trade as a comparison:

- B prospect = Struble
- B prospect = Kulak (he would play top 4 for NSH or could be flipped for another prospect / pick.... if a B prospect makes it to the NHL it's a success so Kulak is arguably more valuable).
- 1st round pick = 1st round pick

The extra is Byron and a 2nd for Haula. Byron and Haula are equal IMO, other than the contract which is why the 2nd round pick was added.

Agreed on Byron, it likely is a mistake, but MTL should look at moving his contract somehow to free up some cap space in the years ahead. I think replacing him with Haula and paying a 2nd is worth it to do so, but I can see the argument against it.

You really are ignoring the fact that teams/owners have no money, there's a pandemic and expansion looming. Muzzin was WAY WAY more valuable as scarcity is a thing rn
You must think trade deadline day will be busier than ever as well with this logic

There are maybe 2, 3 teams that have interest in Ekholm and can protect him in expansion. He's essentially a rental. I dont give close to Muzzin prices. Byron is still valuable especially in 3on3 OT, he's maybe their best player in open ice. I'll take Byron every day and twice on Sundays over plugs like Lehkonen and Armia. Other teams maybe cant fit Lord Byron but he's an assistant Captain on this team and a very important player. No team will value Byron like the Habs do atm
