NCAA player swap before they become free agents this summer

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2021
Published: Mar. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Nashville hangs on to their LHDs at deadline, might something like this be possible? Not a likely trade, but maybe both sides would do it to avoid losing a player for nothing.

(for for that don't follow these guys)
Both players are in NCAA now and can elect to become free agents this summer. Both want to sign where they can get into NHL lineup quickly. Farrance is an two-way D-man at Boston University and Nashville's #4 prospect. Thompson is a forward at Providence and New Jersey's #6 prospect (can play C or RW).

Farrance is almost 2 PPG as a defenseman, Thompson is PPG as a forward
You can guess which one a team would rather have

If one were to make a simple assessment based on a handful of games' stats, sure.
But some NHL clubs hire scouts.
Farrance has played 10 games this year (16 pts).
Over the NCAA careers, Farrance has 88 pts in 112 gp (0.79 ppg)
Thompson has 93 pts in 100 gp (0.93 ppg).
And Farrance said last year, when he announced a return for senior season, that he would go to free agency after.
Thompson has not said this (and could return for another year at Providence).
I assure you both are legit NHL prospects and could be in NHL as early as this season.

did he? I just thought it was all about going back for another shot at the bean pot and birth for the national champ and nothing more than that, anything else was pure speculation

If Farrance actually said that, then he must be an idiot
If I was a defenseman there is no place I would rather be than Nashville, the number of elite defensemen that they create is just insane

He said staying with BU would give him option of getting to free agency.
(not that he will go to free agency)
As far as I know, he has not said anything on it recently.
But now that BU's regular season is over, plenty of speculation is that he does not sign in Nashville.

I would love this trade. Thompson looks very solid but Devils have too many young forwards

BUs season is still not officially over, they can be selected into the tournament, their fate is up to the selection comity now.
and googling it, there is nothing that comes up as a quote from him or his agent talking about Free agency as an option. I think that is just some internet speculation gone wild

The Sens were the ones who drafted and Developed Mark Borowiecki and Ben Harpur though.

BU will be in tournament unless some crazy outcomes with underdogs winning each conference.
So we aren't on "Farrance Watch" quite yet.

Does play right-side though.

Holtz, Mercer, Boqvist/Merkley, Bastian all on the right. Farrance would be a big add to the Devils

Generally not how potential college FA's look at things however.
They want to (1) sign ASAP to burn a year of ELC (2) get into a team's top-6 as quickly as possible.
If Nashville has Josi, Ekholm, Brorowiecki and Davies, he could see a narrower path to playing time there.

Holtz, Mercer, Bastian yes righties
Boqvist Lefty
Merkley Assumed to Seattle but righty

Includes Tolvanen. I was going off pre-season list
(and Devils list included Smith).
So #3 and #5 respectively would be more up-to-date

But would you take him over Tyce Thompson?
Or better yet, would you take the 50/50 chance to sign him over the 80/20 chance of Tyce Thompson?

(the 50/50 and 80/20 are completely made up numbers to make the point)

Yeah, idk that's why I didn't really comment on the original trade bc you never know how likely someone is to sign and whatnot
