He has arthritis. If he doesn't want to risk being in constant pain like he has apparently been for long spurts of the past year or so, he may need a joint replacement which probably = retirement. If he doesn't get a replacement, any surgery they do is probably just a band-aid solution with pain returning again.

In the past klefbom would rest the shoulder during summer and by camp he could play again. His hope was a leave of Absence would quiet the shoulder down and he could play another couple years. He wasn't going to get surgery unless he had to. This means his arthritis hasn't quieted down and he very easily could be on LTIR from here on out. Best case scenario he was going to finish his contract.
