Hamilton is it possible

Created by: PeterK
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 16, 2021
Published: Mar. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't be mad. This all hinges on Anderson's play and if the coach/GM think he can be THE GUY come playoff time. If the answer is NO, there is almost no way to upgrade at the position. Also, you have to be 100% sure that Campbell will be healthy, which at this point is looking bleak. IF those conditions are met, get rid of him and grab a cheaper goalie like Bernier for pro help and hope Campbell can do it. Ullmark I think, Kuemper and Raanta are the only options and 2 are injured, who knows how bad and neither team wants to let them go cheap.

If you add Hamilton, Holl is expendable. I think TOR will protect 4F and 4D with or without a trade like this. I also think Hamilton will be hella expensive but if you get him and can find a way to extend him you have a team.

It'll make it easier to sign a decent UFA goalie like Ullmark in the offseason since you clearly have a solid Dcore signed and one of the best Forward cores.

Offseason: Trade Kerfoot for most you can get. Gives you 17.5M to work with. Hamilton signed for say 7M? Hyman for 4M? and take a run at Ullmark or another goalie to platoon with Campbell for the remaining money, obviously leaving some space for bottom 6 players, including Simmonds on I'd expect a similar deal.

Cup window for about 4 years with that group until changes need to be made, I'd say.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Hamilton, Dougie
Additional Details:
Must come with extended deal in place, or rather an understanding of what dollar value it will take (give him all the money upfront, who cares) and that it'll be able to fit under the cap.
CAR
  1. Andersen, Frederik
  2. Holl, Justin
  3. Hollowell, Mac
  4. Sandin, Rasmus
  5. 2021 1st round pick (TOR)
  6. 2021 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Anderson, Holl can help Carolina this year IF they know they won't be able to sign Hamilton long term. Hurts to lose Sandin.
2.
TOR
  1. Bernier, Jonathan ($1,000,000 retained)
DET
  1. Barabanov, Alexander
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Picks included would depend on salary retained, only retain enough to get you just under the cap. That depends on when the trade is made. Barabanov is lighting it up in the AHL, 2G, 4A in 2G and was playing great for the Leafs in his last 2 or 3 games before being sent down. He's great but not the right fit for the Leafs.

I think it's fair for bernier, even retain up to 1.5M

Overpay I'd say. Dougie's on an expiring contract. Not realistic. And you don't give up that much for a deadline rental, even if it is Dougie Hamilton. Carolina has no reason to trade him but they'd probably pull the trigger on this trade if I had to guess.

He is not becoming an FA. C'mon we'll get him and Svech. We just gotta trust the process.

We are not trading Dougie. He's coming with us on our playoff run. And we WILL sign Dougie and Svech. TRUST THE PROCESS.

I expect so, but wouldn't you like to have future superstar Rasmus Sandin? And cost controlled stud Justin Holl? And have your THIRD string goalie be Mrazek? And not have to pay out your butt for Hamilton?

The trade notes say must have an extension in place.

Not 100% sure on Mrazek's status because he was (is?) injured, but Carolina has 3 goalies who have all played well so can't see how Andersen helps them. You have a great return going to Carolina if they can't sign Hamilton, but let's be real: the Canes look like a legit Cup contender right now. They'll let Hamilton walk for nothing before they risk shaking up their team when they're playing so well.

Both teams pass in my opinion. If this deal comes with an extension, Carolina declines

1. Sandin is NOT a future superstar.
2. Yes, I would like Holl to play on the bottom pair, but then probably get snagged by Seattle or someone.
3. Why would we WANT Mrazek to be our 3rd string goalie? WE want to watch him play.

Still don't like it. Even if we do trade him, We're doing it in the offseason.

Oh, my bad, didn't see the extension part.

I agree, the canes have absolutely no reason to trade Hamilton. And sign and trades don't even exist in the nhl, so this would be a rental, which is a huge overpay for a guy the leafs could sign in FA 4 months later.

I know they won't trade him, but this trade favours Carolina in value big time.

Dougie has 1/2 a year left on his contract. No matter how you spin it, this trade is a massive win for the canes.

Waddell is a smart old fella. He rarely loses on trades and makes smart signings. I don't think Waddell would think "Massive Win"

Yes. I could see him becoming a top 4D in our shallow D prospect pool. Now that Bean has graduated, it is empty.

It's essentually:

An elite rental defenseman

for

A rental starting goaltender
A decent second pairing defenseman
A future top 4 defenseman
A first round pick and a second round pick
And a likely future nhl defenseman.

If Waddell is a smart gm he'd look at this and say yes. But only if Dougie want to go. If Dougie wants to stay, which is more likely, than he would pass, because if Dougie WASN'T a rental no chance this would get him.

If we consider Andersen of any value, which he isn’t, this trade does nothing for Carolina.

Holl is a nice player to have though. Sandin is another Bean that we would hope learns to play good positionally. Late first doesnt do much.

I think the "Smart signings" part is why there's a solid chance Dougie ends up as a UFA.

Now that you say that, I think Dougie might want to stay. The only part that scares me is that he is from Toronto and he spends lots of his summers up there.

If Waddell is a smart GM, he'd be looking to add to his current team (That is very much a contender), not subtract. Dougie is a free rental for them. Yes, this certainly adds to the future for the Canes, but they're fighting to win the Stanley Cup, not the "Prospect depth" cup.

I feel like he'll go to whoever will pay him. If that's Carolina, sure! Toronto will have a tougher time fitting him in without moving a big-4 type contract.
