Description
Do these trades make sense? Will this turn into the infini-build? I think I've traded half of Nashville's roster and set them up to be an exciting and developing team after two years, without being shameful in the meantime. Cousins goes to Seattle. (And yes, I do think that NHL GMs badly under-use salary retention and it should happen way more often.)

The only trade I'd consider is the NYI one.

NJD -- they have no need for Saros when they have Blackwood, and I'd like to get a bit more for Saros anyhow (but I'd be open to moving him)
DAL -- not enough, they'll get a better pick hopefully
EDM -- where is the compensation for taking Neal??
      NYI -- sure
PIT -- not the right pieces for Ekholm
AVS -- not really worth the retention if all you can get is a 5th
FLA -- maybe to this one? But I don't think NSH would need to retain at all here, and FLA might even need to add another mid round pick since they are getting rid of the multi-year Connolly contract (and don't seem to want him at all anymore)
WPG -- I can't see Poile trading Forsberg to WPG when they'll be in our division again next year -- and why does WPG need another winger? They need defense more. I think both teams decline.
VAN -- not enough incentive to take that contract, need a 1st at least -- but also, I can't really see teams wanting to take on big contracts for picks when they are already losing money

Hard to imagine a long-term Preds plan that
      (1) adds salary at deadline
      (2) does not include Tomasino, Farrance or Campbell

I'd be OK with the Granlund return. Everything else is a tire fire.

They have Blackwood, but they'll probably want a young 1B. A second doesn't seem like a lot, but Saros has had a rough start to the year, so I figure that drags his value down a little.

What else were you going to do with that cap space? Get something for him and let the free agents of the world know "we'll trade you to a contender if we can".

Never been a big fan of the "don't trade within your division" idea. If it's good for you, make the trade. And Winnipeg... Yes, their bigger need is on defence. But having turned Laine and Roslovic into Dubois, they suddenly find themselves down two wingers and up a centre. They could use a winger. (especially a defensively-solid one like Forsberg)

You made me go look up Campbell and... yes, that seems like a player who should be part of the plan. That might shuffle some of my apparent needs. And yes, Farrance is welcome. (although maybe he should start in the AHL?) And I love Tomasino.

Saros is going to be an RFA and will want a raise over $3m probably -- I just don't really see why they would want him. And if Saros leaves, is NSH really ready for Ingram to be a 1B to Rinne (if he even resigns and doesn't retire) -- I don't think so.

It's not about the cap space, it's the fact you can only retain on 3 deals at any given time -- this takes up one of those spots and doesn't bring back much value. I mean, you could probably get a 5th for Boro without the retention.

Sure, they could use a winger to a certain extent -- but their big need is on defense. They're still scoring goals at a good rate (8th in the NHL right now). They're middle of the pack in goals against -- which has more to do with goaltending than defense I would think. But adding a guy like Ekholm would make a lot more sense there. And sure, I would normally agree with you there about division trades, but not when it comes to your best offensive player. You typically trade those guys to a different conference because you don't want to see him light you up 5+ times a year. Karlsson goes to a different conference, Stone to a different conference, Laine/Dubois to different conferences, etc.

Islanders don’t need centers. Also Bolduc is a good prospect. You wouldn’t get him alone for Granlund.
