Ultimate cap clear for next season for illustration more than realism

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2021
Published: Mar. 18, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Start clearing cap at the TDL with the Compher trade. The Graves trade continues that, and then Johnson to Anaheim and Donskoi to Seattle completes it. This allows the team to keep Saad and sign even another UFA (I went big here with RNH). Might be a little too much, but figured why not illustrate all of it.

More realistically drop the Johnson trade and the RNH signing and add a guy like Palmieri instead.

Xdraft:

-Saad signs after, so no need to protects him. If no Johnson trade, then he waives.

-Protected forwards: MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Kadri, Burakovsky, Nichushkin, Jost

-Protected defensemen: Makar, Girard, Toews

-Exposed: Donskoi, O'Connor, Hajek, MacDonald (Johnson as well if he isn't traded beforehand)

Seattle takes Donskoi.

Trades
1.

  1. Johansson, Jonas [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Staal as well. Happens before this year's TDL. Maybe a third instead of Mutala or Kamenev works. Not sure, but I think they can figure this one out if they want to. Compher would be a good fit in Buffalo (imo).
BUF
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Kamenev, Vladislav [Reserve List]
  3. Mutala, Sasha [Reserve List]
  4. Werner, Adam [RFA Rights]
2.
COL
  1. Hájek, Libor [RFA Rights]
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Pre-expansion draft trade. NY can protect Graves, and he would be a good add for them. Avs take a flyer on a young defenseman and also get a pick. Moving Graves allows them to craft their strategy so that Donskoi (and his salary) goes to Seattle.
3.
COL
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
This is the least likely of the bunch (imo), but it clears cap for the Avs and helps them with the expansion draft. Johnson has interests outside of hockey that lie in California, so I think he'd be open to this. Anaheim probably won't though.
ANA
  1. Johnson, Erik ($3,000,000 retained)
  2. Kaut, Martin
4.

If Colorado Can't trade Erik Johnson then they'll have to protect him from Seattle. So I think Seattle will probably end up taking Devon Toews.

You aren't the only one who thinks that, but my personal opinion is that Toews will be protected in any and all scenarios. He leads the team in ice time (slightly ahead of Makar), which tells you something about how valuable they think he is.

I think Johnson waives his NMC since he won't be taken anyway. If he doesn't though, then my opinion is the worst case scenario is they go with 8 skaters and lose Burakovsky.

Ya I can see that happening too I just don't know how willing Colorado will be to use the 8 skaters option.

EJ is either waiving or getting bought out.
