To get both of them with retained salary? I can't imagine so.

What would need to be added?

    Look at it this way....

Ekholm is a legit top four LHD that can play effectively in all situations. (Arguably even a top pairing one).
Forsberg is a legit goal scoring top line winger who can play effectively in all situations.

Both have the remainder of this year and next year left on their contracts at very reasonable numbers.

What would you want in return if the ask was reversed and it was Morgan Rielly and William Nylander going out the door with one year left on their current deals?

My best guess would be A LOT!

Expect nothing less from Nashville. (Especially if there are large retentions in play).

That is a great question. I'm no Nashville fan, but I'd imagine if they were packaging their two best assets with that much retained salary they'd probably want Sandin. He's got a higher ceiling than Liljegren. But some TSN people have said that he's close to untouchable, so I'm not sure.
But my guess is Sandin has to factor in there.

Robertson + Sandin + 1st round pick probably gets them listening. Anything short of that with those retentions.... I doubt it.

My issue isn't about the value of the respective trade elements but the entire Forsberg-Ekholm strategy. With Forsberg, you have 5 forwards you have to protect in the expansion draft and with Ekholm you have what seem to me to be 4 defensemen you'll want to protect. So how do you resolve that conundrum short of an expensive side deal with the Kraken, thereby adding to the cost of the acquisition?

I like the oft-suggested Granlund-Ekholm alternative much better. I wonder who proposed it first?

I doubt the Leafs would have interest in making a deal as splashy as this. They still have the expansion draft to consider.

Look for a legit top six forward and a "depth" D on an expiring contracts to be the additions. That is my guess anyways.

I didn’t think about that. So you think maybe it’s be easier going after Granland? He’s cheaper and expiring next year so maybe Nashville would be willing to retain half on him for a lot less?

Yes, and Dubas is on record that unlike his strategy in previous years, this season it may make sense to go after a UFA as his primary target. Granlund as the forward allows Toronto to go 8 and 1 for Seattle, exposing Kerfoot and Engvall as the qualified forwards and Holl and Dermott on the back end, thus assuring that 5 of this season's 6 primary defensemen (plus Sandin and Liljegren if not traded) return.

Add Kerfoot and possibly another draft pick (a 2nd or 3rd in 2022 or 2023) to this and I think they could be sold on this. If not, throw in a lower tier prospect like SDA or Abramov

Redid the trade. Is the value closer now?
